Drone attack in Saudi Arabia injures 16 people

At least 16 individuals sustained injuries in an airport drone attack on Monday, February 21. The incident was an outcome of the interception and destruction of a drone carrying explosives.

Sources state that the drone was launched by Yemen.

According to the statement released by the kingdom’s administrative officials, the King Abdullah Airport in the Saudi city of Jizan was the target of the drone. The airport is situated near the Middle East country’s border with Yemen.

The defence forces of Saudi Arabia claims the drone was launched from Sanaa’s airport, which is situated in the Yemeni capital.

The wounded travellers were of different nationalities, of which three are in serious condition.

A short video has been broadcasted by a local news channel. In the clip, the aftermath situation of airport can be seen; the glass shattered across the floor inside the airport near a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store.

Both of the countries at one point enjoyed sound relations and were closely cooperating in military, economic and cultural issues, but since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been in the cold war with Yemen.

United Nations, in its recent report, cites that the previous month witnessed the highest number of civilian fatalities in the time frame of the past three years. The data notes over 650 civilians lost their lives in the month of January 2022, following the airstrikes, shelling, small arms fire and other violence-related activities.

The previous month, a detention establishment in Houthi witnessed a coalition airstrike in which 300 inmates either died or sustained injuries.

The Houthi–Saudi Arabian conflict is an ongoing armed dispute between the Royal Saudi Armed Forces & Yemeni Houthi forces. The major areas of conflict have been taking place in the – Arabian Peninsula, including the southern Saudi regions of Asir, Jizan, and Najran, and northern Yemeni governorates of Saada, Al Jawf, and Hajjah.
