WhatsApp to End Support for iPhones Running iOS Versions Older Than 15.1 in May 2025

WhatsApp will soon stop working on older iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and 6 Plus, requiring iOS 12 or later. Android users must have version 5.0 or newer to continue accessing the popular messaging app

UAE: WhatsApp has announced that, starting May 5, 2025, it will no longer support iPhones operating on iOS versions older than 15.1.

This change will impact users of older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, rendering the popular messaging app inaccessible on these devices.

Currently, WhatsApp is compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 or newer and iPhones operating on iOS 12 or later.

However, the new update reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to aligning with the latest technological standards, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility with the newest features in mobile technology.

Why the Update?

In a statement on its website, WhatsApp clarified the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing the need to focus resources on maintaining compatibility with modern systems.

“Every year, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp,” the company noted.

By discontinuing support for older operating systems, WhatsApp aims to streamline its development process, allowing it to integrate advancements in technology seamlessly.

Impact on Users

For iPhone users, this update means that those with newer models capable of upgrading to iOS 15.1 or beyond will continue to have access to WhatsApp, provided they install the latest software updates.

Users with unsupported devices will need to either update their operating system—if an upgrade is available—or transition to newer hardware.

To avoid service disruptions, WhatsApp will notify users in advance via the app, reminding them to upgrade their devices or operating systems before the May 2025 deadline.

How to Update Your iPhone

For users with iPhones running an iOS version earlier than 15.1 but capable of an update, upgrading is simple. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update on the device to download and install the latest version of iOS. This will ensure continued access to WhatsApp’s features and services.

WhatsApp also advises against using jailbroken or unlocked iPhones, as these devices do not meet the platform’s security and functionality standards.

Android Users Unaffected

Unlike iPhone users, Android users will not be impacted by this update. WhatsApp will remain compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 and newer.

The Broader Implications

The decision underscores the rapidly evolving nature of technology, where software and hardware compatibility must be regularly updated to meet modern standards.

WhatsApp’s approach is consistent with the practices of other tech companies, which routinely phase out support for older systems to enhance security and functionality.

For iPhone users, the change is a reminder of the importance of keeping devices updated. While the news may inconvenience users of older models, it reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to ensuring a secure and feature-rich experience for its millions of users worldwide.

For further updates and advice on upgrading devices, users are encouraged to monitor notifications within the WhatsApp app and consult official resources.
