Dubai – A Malaysian man has been sentenced to life in prison, followed by deportation, for attempting to smuggle over 4kg of cocaine through Dubai International Airport.
The Dubai Criminal Court found the 37-year-old guilty of trafficking narcotics after he was caught on July 13, 2023, while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Brazil via Lisbon and Dubai.
The case came to light when customs inspectors at Dubai International noticed the defendant exhibiting unusual signs of nervousness.
Authorities observed that he was walking with difficulty, prompting them to request his passport and escort him to a transit inspection area.
There, his hand luggage was searched, leading to the discovery of two plastic-wrapped packages containing a white powdery substance.
A forensic analysis by the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology confirmed that the substance was cocaine, weighing a total of 4,193.5 grams.
During the investigation, the defendant admitted that he was asked by an individual in Brazil to transport the bag to Malaysia in exchange for $500.
He claimed that he was unaware of the contents but was told that they were “valuable items” and that he would be compensated for avoiding tax payments.
Despite his defense, the court ruled that the defendant’s actions clearly indicated he was fully aware of the illicit nature of the substance.
The weight of the cocaine and the sophisticated concealment method reinforced this conclusion.
The court also highlighted the defendant’s agreement to carry the contraband for financial compensation as significant evidence of his intent to smuggle drugs.
The defendant pleaded not guilty during the trial, insisting that he had no knowledge of the contents of the packages and did not intend to engage in drug trafficking.
However, the court dismissed his defense, citing strong evidence, including his confession during the investigation, the forensic report, and expert testimony from the arresting officer.
In its verdict, the court underscored the application of UAE law, stating that drug trafficking laws apply even in transit cases where the narcotics enter the country’s jurisdiction.
The court further emphasized that the defendant’s actions—such as agreeing to carry the contraband and attempting to conceal it—were deliberate and calculated.
Under UAE law, life imprisonment typically refers to a 25-year sentence, with the additional penalty of deportation after serving his term.
The ruling serves as a stern reminder of the country’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking, regardless of the circumstances of transit through its airports.
This case is part of a broader effort by UAE authorities to combat the global narcotics trade, which often involves the use of major airports like Dubai International as transit points for illicit substances.
