The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed another commanding display from the South Africa national cricket team as they defeated the United Arab Emirates national cricket team by six wickets on Wednesday, completing the group stage unbeaten.
Opting to test their bench strength, South Africa made four changes, while UAE introduced two adjustments to their lineup.
Asked to bat first with rain clouds hovering, UAE started brightly, largely driven by an aggressive innings from Muhammad Waseem, who struck a hat-trick of boundaries against the new ball.
However, the momentum shifted quickly once South Africa introduced spin and disciplined short-pitched bowling. The turning point came when Corbin Bosch used bounce and accuracy to dismantle UAE’s middle order.
His relentless short-ball strategy kept the batters under constant pressure, eventually resulting in impressive figures of 3-12 and earning him the Player of the Match award.
UAE’s resistance came mainly through Alishan Sharafu, who battled hard to score 45 runs. Despite surviving multiple dropped catches and undergoing two concussion checks after being struck by bouncers, Sharafu anchored the innings.
Meanwhile, South African pacer Anrich Nortje contributed with crucial breakthroughs, marking his return to T20I wickets since the 2024 World Cup final.
UAE ultimately managed 122 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs, a total that appeared below par despite the testing conditions.
South Africa’s chase was briefly delayed by rain, an unusual occurrence in Delhi during this time of year. Once play resumed, UAE attempted to control proceedings with spin from both ends.
The tactic initially showed promise when the South African captain fell after a quick cameo, but the target never posed serious difficulty.
Ryan Rickelton provided early momentum with fluent boundary hitting, while Dewald Brevis delivered a confident 36-run knock that steadied the innings.
Despite Brevis briefly requiring medical attention after being struck on the glove, he quickly regained composure and played a series of attacking strokes, including a powerful six that shifted the momentum decisively.
Rickelton added 30 runs before falling while attempting another big hit, but by then, the outcome was largely settled. The finishing touches were calmly applied by South Africa’s lower middle order, sealing victory with 40 balls remaining.
Bosch later credited the team’s communication and favorable early conditions for their success, noting that morning rain assisted the bowlers by providing extra seam movement.
With this victory, South Africa advanced confidently into the Super Eight stage, where they are scheduled to face the formidable India national cricket team in Ahmedabad on February 22.
The upcoming clash promises to be one of the tournament’s most anticipated encounters as South Africa aim to extend their winning streak against one of cricket’s strongest sides.
