Abu Dhabi Launches Region’s First Fully Driverless Commercial Vehicle Operations

Abu Dhabi has become the first in the MENA region to introduce fully driverless commercial vehicle operations, marking a major milestone in the UAE’s smart mobility goals after extensive testing and regulatory supervision

Abu Dhabi has taken a historic leap in the future of transport with the official launch of fully driverless commercial vehicle operations, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The milestone was announced by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, marking a major advancement in the emirate’s smart mobility strategy.

The launch follows extensive collaboration with the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council and the UAE Regulations Lab (RegLab) at the General Secretariat of the Cabinet.

After months of evaluations, the first two operating permits for Level 4 autonomous vehicles have been awarded to leading global developers WeRide and AutoGo-K2.

Authorities confirmed that the rollout followed rigorous safety assessments, operational readiness checks, and a series of real-world traffic tests carried out across Abu Dhabi.

These assessments covered the vehicles’ sensor accuracy, system reliability, performance across different road conditions, and responses to unexpected driving scenarios.

Officials highlighted that the successful completion of these tests ensures that the vehicles meet the highest international safety standards.

To support the driverless operations, vehicle movements will be monitored around the clock through an advanced digital platform developed by the ITC. This system will work in coordination with operators to oversee fleet behaviour, enhance safety, and respond to any anomalies in real time.

The monitoring platform is a key part of the emirate’s strategy to ensure seamless integration of autonomous vehicles into public road networks.

The announcement also reflects the results of extensive coordination between multiple government bodies, including the Supervisor Committee for Advanced Driving Systems Testing, chaired by the Ministry of Interior.

The committee oversaw the broader testing framework, ensuring compliance with national standards for emerging mobility technologies.

The UAE has long positioned itself as a global testbed for advanced mobility solutions, aiming to build a sustainable, technology-driven transport ecosystem.

Authorities noted that the launch of fully driverless commercial operations supports national goals related to innovation, safety, environmental sustainability, and future-ready infrastructure.

Industry experts say the move places Abu Dhabi among a select group of cities worldwide that have successfully integrated Level 4 autonomous vehicles into commercial transport services.

This level of automation allows vehicles to operate independently without human intervention in designated areas, marking a significant technological milestone.

Officials stated that the launch represents only the beginning of a wider expansion plan. More operators are expected to join the programme after meeting the necessary safety and compliance requirements.

The emirate aims to gradually broaden the deployment to additional zones, enhancing mobility options for residents and visitors.

With the UAE accelerating its smart city initiatives, the introduction of fully driverless commercial vehicles underscores the nation’s commitment to pioneering next-generation transport solutions.

The achievement reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional leader in innovation, setting the stage for broader adoption of autonomous mobility in the coming years.
