Named after the Arabic word for “ease,” the system will initially be implemented in new developments, with plans for retroactive application to existing buildings and public spaces.

  • Sahel Building Rating – Evaluating accessibility in commercial, public, and government buildings.

Each category will be assessed based on four levels of accessibility: Accessible, Adaptable, Inclusive, and Exemplar, setting clear benchmarks for developers and authorities to follow.

These ratings ensure that accessibility features are integrated throughout the lifecycle of a built environment—from design to construction and operation.

Multi-Stage Implementation Process

The Sahel Rating System will be enforced through a structured evaluation process across different stages:

  • Design Stage: Compliance will be assessed through the DMT’s regulatory framework, ensuring accessibility is embedded in the project plans.
  • Construction Stage: An audit process will verify that the design specifications are implemented accurately, with regular reports submitted to the authorities.
  • Operational Stage: Once buildings and spaces are in use, their functionality will be reassessed every five years to maintain or update their accessibility certification.
