Dh70,000 Rolex ‘Stolen’ on Flight: UAE Passengers Recount Horrors of Losing Valuables Mid-Air

Hameed from his ordeal, he boarded a crowded flight to Doha, where he fell asleep, unaware of the theft that would soon occur. It was only upon reaching his destination that he discovered his Rolex and cash missing, totaling thousands of dirhams

A series of reported theft incidents aboard flights departing from or arriving in the UAE have raised concerns among travelers, shedding light on potential vulnerabilities in airline security.

From missing cash to fraudulent transactions, passengers have shared alarming stories of valuables disappearing from their carry-on bags during flights, prompting calls for increased vigilance and preventive measures.

One such account comes from former UAE resident Arsalan Hameed, whose harrowing experience unfolded during a journey from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh via Doha.

Hameed, a Pakistani national, found himself grappling with flight delays and cancellations due to inclement weather conditions. Exhausted from his ordeal, he boarded a crowded flight to Doha, where he fell asleep, unaware of the theft that would soon occur.

It was only upon reaching his destination that he discovered his Rolex and cash missing, totaling thousands of dirhams.

Sadly, Hameed’s ordeal is not an isolated incident. Sharjah resident Muhammad Salman Lakhany recounted a similar tale of theft during a flight from Riyadh to Dubai, where he discovered his card had been used for a fraudulent transaction and cash had vanished from his carry-on bag.

To shed light on the prevalence of such incidents, Khaleej Times spoke with Bhavica Khatri, a former cabin crew member, who provided insights into the modus operandi of organized theft groups.

Khatri revealed that coordinated thefts often occur during night flights when passengers are asleep and cabin crew are occupied elsewhere. These perpetrators exploit the darkness and distraction to rummage through overhead bins and bags, pilfering valuables without detection until it’s too late.

While UAE airlines declined to comment on these incidents, travel experts and authorities have offered advice on how passengers can protect themselves.

Manoj Tahelani, CEO and Founder of Mayra Tours, emphasized the importance of discreetly informing cabin crew if theft is suspected during a flight, while urging victims to report incidents to local authorities promptly.

Despite efforts to combat theft, some passengers, like Hameed, have encountered challenges in seeking recourse for their losses.

Despite reporting the theft to the airline, Hameed was met with disappointment when informed that he was responsible for his possessions while onboard.

In response to these incidents, travel experts have shared a series of safety tips to help passengers safeguard their belongings.

Suggestions include:

  • Investing in travel insurance.
  • Keeping valuables close.
  • Using luggage locks.
  • Staying vigilant of surroundings.

As the travel industry grapples with the aftermath of these thefts, there is a collective call for increased awareness and proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of passengers.

With travelers sharing their stories and experts offering guidance, the hope is to foster a safer and more secure travel experience for all.
