Dominica: Dr Roosevelt Skerrit – The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica has recently delivered his address during the 8th Round of Consultations held between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and Caribbean Nations. 

The meeting was conducted on Friday, July 7, 2023, where he called the Chinese authorities for support regarding the security, governance crises and humanitarian challenges in Haiti.

During his opening remarks, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit addressed a number of issues that the Haiti people are facing. He noted that the country is going through humanitarian and security crises, which should be considered by the other Caribbean countries and leaders.

The establishment of a Security Council Resolution will be required to address and purpose a likely solution for the issues in Haiti, said PM Skerrit.

In order to achieve that, he has reached out to the Chinese authorities present at the meeting and requested assistance to deal with such challenges in Haiti. 

Before the 8th Round of Consultation meetings, the Caribbean leaders and Prime Minister Skerrit participated in the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting held in Trinidad and Tobago, where the need for a Humanitarian and Security Stabilization Corridor was first pointed out.

It was emphasized that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution should also mandate the Humanitarian Corridor for Haiti. 

During the meeting, the Caribbean leaders also outlined that to deal with the challenges in Haiti, support from outside international partners should be requested to establish and strengthen security.

While mentioning the current situation in Haiti, PM Skerrit has also outlined a number of distinct issues in front of the Caribbean region, such as climate change, food security, international financial systems, and air transportation security. 

He stressed that consultation under the mandate of the UNSC is essential to find innovative ways to tackle these common challenges.

It was also pointed out that the Caribbean countries must approach these challenges jointly and with urgency to secure the people’s futures. 

Furthermore, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has also expressed his interest in strongly partnering with China as the Small Island Developing States to excel in their innovation in science and technology and to deal with such global issues.

On their part, Hua Chunying, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, has also addressed the 8th Round of Consultations held between the Caribbean Countries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, noted reports.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Hua Chunying, was praised and received gratitude from the Prime Minister of Skerrit. The Minister emphasized the importance of a fruitful relationship between the two countries and extended full support in various fields to Dominica, such as security assistance, infrastructure, security assistance, trade, and COVID-19 aid.

PM Skerrit has also stated that the relationship between both Dominica and China has been moving towards the progressive path, and the role of China has been a key support for the Caribbean country in many spheres of growth and development. China has been offering support in dealing with climate change issues, post-disaster relief, and building better resilience systems.
