Dubai Encourages Transition to EVs with Dewa’s Green Charger Card: Registration and Benefits Explained

The Green Charger Card allows users to easily access Dewa's extensive network of EV charging stations. It can be linked to a user's existing Dewa account, enabling the inclusion of EV charging fees in the monthly water and electricity bill

Dubai is making strides in promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its broader sustainability goals.

To support this transition, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has introduced the Green Charger Card, designed to simplify the process of charging EVs across the emirate.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s push to reduce carbon emissions and expand the availability of EV infrastructure.

The Green Charger Card allows users to easily access Dewa’s extensive network of EV charging stations. It can be linked to a user’s existing Dewa account, enabling the inclusion of EV charging fees in the monthly water and electricity bill.

The card’s integration aims to offer greater convenience for residents and businesses looking to adopt EVs as their primary mode of transportation.

Steps to Register for the Green Charger Card

Current Dewa customers can register for the Green Charger Card by logging in with their Dewa ID or UAE Pass via the authority’s website or smart app.

Non-Dewa customers will need to obtain a Dewa ID or use their UAE Pass to apply for the service. Once the EV account registration is complete, customers receive a notification number through email and SMS, allowing them to track the status of their application.

The Green Charger Card is delivered through a courier within three working days after the account is created, ensuring a swift start to the EV charging experience.

Fees and Requirements

To facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles, Dewa has implemented a straightforward fee structure. A security deposit of AED 500 is required for non-commercial individual or business use, along with a delivery charge of AED 20. The security deposit is refundable upon account closure, provided all dues are cleared.

Expanding EV Infrastructure in Dubai

The UAE government has been actively promoting the shift from petrol cars to electric vehicles, encouraging residents to embrace more eco-friendly transportation options.

To make this transition as seamless as possible, authorities are expanding the EV charging infrastructure throughout the country.

Dewa’s Green Charger initiative is a critical component of this effort, providing more than 370 charging stations at key locations across Dubai, with plans for further expansion.

At the recent Gitex 2024 technology exhibition, Dewa awarded its first two Charge Point Operator (CPO) licenses to Tesla and UAEV, marking a significant step toward increasing the number of available charging stations.

The licensing of private companies aims to enhance Dubai’s EV charging network, ensuring that it can accommodate the growing number of electric vehicles on the road.

Benefits for EV Owners

Using the Green Charger Card streamlines the EV ownership experience by consolidating utility payments and providing access to a broad network of charging stations.

The card’s integration with the Dewa account simplifies billing, making it easier for customers to monitor their electricity usage and manage costs associated with EV charging.

As Dubai continues to invest in green energy initiatives, the adoption of electric vehicles is expected to rise, bolstered by policies that incentivize sustainable practices.

The Green Charger Card represents a significant step in making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and convenient for the city’s residents.

A Greener Future

The UAE’s commitment to sustainable transportation is reflected in its ambitious plans to increase the number of electric vehicles on the road.

By supporting infrastructure development and offering incentives such as the Green Charger Card, Dubai is paving the way for a future where eco-friendly travel is the norm rather than the exception.
