Dubai Motorist Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Drug Offences and Traffic Violations

The accused was found guilty of several charges, including the consumption of psychotropic substances, driving under the influence of drugs, and operating an uninsured vehicle on public roads with an expired driving licence

In a significant ruling, the Dubai Traffic Court has sentenced a motorist to two years in prison and imposed a hefty fine of Dh100,000 for a series of severe traffic violations coupled with drug-related offences.

The court’s decision highlights the ongoing crackdown on dangerous driving behaviours that compromise road safety in the emirate.

The accused was found guilty of several charges, including the consumption of psychotropic substances, driving under the influence of drugs, and operating an uninsured vehicle on public roads with an expired driving licence.

The severity of these violations reflects the court’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safety of all road users.

In addition to the prison sentence and financial penalty, the court has ordered the suspension of the driver’s licence for one year.

Following the completion of his prison term, the individual will also face deportation from the UAE, a measure aimed at reinforcing the nation’s zero-tolerance policy towards traffic violations and drug use.

To further underline the importance of financial responsibility, the court has restricted the motorist from transferring or depositing any funds to others—either directly or through an intermediary—without the explicit permission of the UAE Central Bank, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. This restriction will remain in place for two years after the conclusion of the prison sentence.

Counselor Salah Bu Farousha Al Falasi, the senior advocate general and head of the traffic prosecution, took the opportunity to remind all drivers of the dangers associated with narcotics and the necessity of adhering to traffic laws.

“We urge all vehicle drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of narcotics and to abide by traffic laws and regulations to ensure traffic safety for all road users in Dubai,” he stated.

The case underscores the UAE’s stringent regulations regarding drug use and driving. According to UAE law, motorists caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol face severe penalties, including a one-year suspension of their driving licence starting from the date of the verdict. Courts typically impose fines or jail time depending on the gravity of the offence.

Moreover, operating a vehicle with an expired driving licence or registration incurs a fine of Dh500 and may result in four black points on the offender’s licence, with the possibility of the vehicle being confiscated.

Driving an uninsured vehicle also carries a Dh500 fine, four black points, and can lead to the vehicle being confiscated by authorities for seven days.

This recent case serves as a stark reminder of the legal and personal consequences of violating traffic laws in the UAE.

The authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure that the roads are safe for all, and they continue to issue stern warnings against irresponsible driving behaviours.

As the UAE prioritizes road safety, this ruling reflects the judicial system’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting the community from the dangers associated with impaired and reckless driving.
