Dubai Opens Phase One of Hessa Street Project to Ease Traffic

The Roads and Transport Authority has opened phase one of the Dh690 million Hessa Street Development Project, widening key corridors and adding bridges to improve traffic flow between major highways and surrounding residential communities in Dubai

Traffic movement across one of Dubai’s busiest corridors is set to improve significantly with the opening of phase one of the Hessa Street Development Project, announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The milestone marks a major step in easing congestion between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, two of the emirate’s most critical highways.

The newly opened section covers a 4.5-kilometre stretch of Hessa Street, which has been expanded to four lanes in each direction.
The upgrade also includes the construction of new bridges at key intersections with Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street, and Sheikh Zayed Road, allowing traffic to flow more freely and reducing delays during peak hours.

According to the RTA, the project has now reached 90 per cent completion. Remaining works, including further road enhancements, intersection upgrades, and the addition of new cycling infrastructure, are scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of this year.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the Dh690 million project reflects Dubai’s commitment to expanding its road network in line with rapid urban and population growth.

He noted that improving connectivity between residential areas and major highways is essential to maintaining mobility and economic efficiency across the city.

Once fully completed, the development is expected to double the road’s capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour. This increase is expected to significantly reduce congestion for motorists travelling between major highways and nearby communities.

The upgraded Hessa Street will serve several fast-growing residential districts, including Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle. Population projections indicate that more than 640,000 residents will live in these areas by 2030, underscoring the need for improved transport infrastructure.

Beyond easing road traffic, the project also places a strong emphasis on sustainable mobility. A 13.5-kilometre cycling and e-scooter track is being developed as part of the scheme, connecting Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills.

The route includes dedicated bridges over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape while enhancing safety for cyclists and e-scooter users.

The Hessa Street Development Project forms part of Dubai’s broader strategy to encourage alternative transport options, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and create a more balanced and efficient urban transport system.

With phase one now open to traffic, commuters are already expected to benefit from smoother journeys, while the final phase promises further improvements that will support Dubai’s long-term growth and mobility goals.
