Dubai Police to Deploy ‘Silent Radars’ in Residential Areas to Enhance Road Safety

The silent radars will serve a dual purpose: monitoring for speeding violations as well as other critical traffic infractions, such as the use of mobile phones while driving and the failure to wear seatbelts

Dubai, UAE – July 25, 2024 – In a significant move to bolster traffic safety within residential neighborhoods, the Dubai Police have announced plans to deploy advanced ‘silent radars’ across various communities.

Unlike traditional radars, these devices will operate without the blaring flashes typically associated with speed enforcement, aiming to promote safer driving behaviors without the overt visibility of conventional systems.

The silent radars will serve a dual purpose: monitoring for speeding violations as well as other critical traffic infractions, such as the use of mobile phones while driving and the failure to wear seatbelts.

This comprehensive approach is intended to encourage drivers to adhere to all traffic regulations, even in less scrutinized residential areas.

Salma Mohammed Rashed Almarri, the head of the Traffic Awareness section at Dubai Police, emphasized that these radars are designed to identify a wide range of violations.

“Our focus is not solely on speeding,” she said. “We are targeting behavioral infractions like using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt, which are just as crucial for road safety.”

Almarri reassured that all fines issued through these radars will be meticulously reviewed. “Behavioral fines are double-checked using video footage before they are issued,” she confirmed. This added layer of verification aims to ensure that only legitimate violations result in penalties.

Tech-Driven Traffic Management

The introduction of silent radars reflects Dubai’s commitment to employing cutting-edge technology to enhance road safety.

Hassan Ali Taleb Alhamer from the Traffic Technology Department explained that these devices are capable of detecting a variety of traffic violations beyond just speeding.

“Our radars also catch illegal U-turns and other infractions,” he said. “They are part of a broader system of advanced traffic control technologies.”

The radars installed across Dubai’s roadways are equipped to monitor multiple lanes simultaneously.

They can detect speeding and other infractions even if a vehicle is partially obscured, thanks to their advanced imaging and license plate recognition capabilities. This technology aims to ensure that even the most cautious drivers are held accountable for their actions.

Dubai’s extensive traffic management infrastructure also includes real-time monitoring from the Dubai Police Command Control Centre.

Major Mohammed Shahriyar Alblooshi, assistant director of the Command Control Centre, explained that the centre utilizes large screens to oversee traffic conditions across the city.

“We can detect and address traffic issues immediately,” he said. “If a problem arises, our patrols are dispatched directly from the control centre.”

Captain Majid Al Qassim, head of specialized operations, added that the command centre’s screens are instrumental in managing road incidents efficiently.

“Our monitoring system allows us to coordinate with various assets, including ambulances and patrols, ensuring prompt response to emergencies,” he noted.

This coordination was recently demonstrated when the command centre quickly addressed a situation involving obstructing RTA buses, guiding motorists and assisting passengers.

Enforcement and Education

The silent radars are part of a broader strategy to ensure consistent enforcement and improve driver education.

Dubai Police have been actively promoting awareness about safe driving practices, including maintaining a proper following distance. Violations of this nature can result in fines of up to Dh400.

The Dubai Police’s approach underscores their commitment to not only penalizing infractions but also fostering a culture of safety on the roads.

“Our goal is to maintain a safe driving environment, rather than just catching people speeding,” said Captain Al Qassim. “We want drivers to adopt safe practices consistently.”

Community Impact

Residents are expected to feel the impact of these new radars as they become operational. Many drivers in Dubai have become accustomed to slowing down near visible radars, but the silent nature of these new devices means that compliance must be more consistent.

By targeting a broader range of violations, the Dubai Police aim to improve overall road safety and reduce the frequency of traffic-related incidents.

As the exact deployment timeline for the silent radars remains unclear, the Dubai Police continue to emphasize their commitment to using technology for public safety.

The radars are anticipated to be a key component in the ongoing efforts to make Dubai’s roads safer for all users, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a leader in innovative traffic management.

The introduction of silent radars represents a proactive step towards a more secure driving environment in Dubai’s residential areas.

Through advanced technology and rigorous enforcement, the Dubai Police are setting a new standard for road safety that aims to benefit all residents and visitors alike.
