Dubai is taking significant steps towards creating more sustainable and livable residential areas with its ambitious Super Block initiative.
Announced on Thursday, the initiative aims to transform several neighborhoods into car-free zones, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists to enhance urban living and environmental sustainability.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, revealed the initiative on X, highlighting its alignment with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
This long-term vision focuses on improving infrastructure while fostering a greener, more sustainable urban environment.
Transforming Neighborhoods for a Greener Future
Residential areas including Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone will be turned into pedestrian-friendly zones.
These areas will see an increase in green spaces, improved air quality, and enhanced social interactions through shared recreational public spaces.
The initiative seeks to elevate the quality of life for residents by creating vibrant community-centric environments that encourage walking and cycling over vehicle use.
The Super Block initiative comes on the heels of another major urban development: the planned construction of the world’s tallest well-being resort as part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.
The city has allocated Dh2 billion towards the development of ‘Therme Dubai’ at Zabeel Park, scheduled to open in 2028. The resort will feature an interactive park and the world’s largest indoor botanical garden, expected to host 1.7 million visitors annually.
Expanding Walkability with a 6,500km Network
Dubai is also making strides in enhancing pedestrian infrastructure with a comprehensive 6,500km network of modern walkways covering 160 areas across the city.
This ambitious project aims to improve pedestrian accessibility, promote soft mobility, and reduce carbon emissions, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable cityscape.
As part of the Dubai Walk master plan, the city will construct 3,300km of new walkways and rehabilitate 2,300km of existing pathways by 2040.
Additionally, over 900km of walkways are planned beyond 2040, ensuring long-term urban sustainability. This extensive network will provide residents and tourists with scenic and enjoyable routes to explore the city, further enhancing Dubai’s urban experience.
Greening Dubai: A Commitment to Sustainability
Dubai’s environmental initiatives extend beyond pedestrian-friendly zones. In 2024, the city planted an impressive 216,500 trees—a 17% increase from 2023.
This equates to an average of 600 trees being planted daily, contributing to improved air quality and biodiversity. Additionally, green spaces expanded by 391.5 hectares, marking a 57% growth from the previous year.
Dubai Municipality played a crucial role in these efforts, planting 5.3 million seedlings of flowers and ornamental plants while replacing 45 million seasonal flowers across three cycles throughout the year.
Through these proactive initiatives, Dubai is setting new global standards in urban planning, sustainability, and community well-being.
The emirate’s continued investments in infrastructure, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly developments reaffirm its commitment to fostering a high-quality urban lifestyle for residents and visitors alike.
