Middle East, Egypt: The Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr Mostafa Madbouly, has chaired the Supreme Committee of the National Council for Climate Change meeting to discuss various challenges and issues. The top government officials and ministers, and members of the cabinet attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly expressed his gratitude and greeted the ministers and government officials to take part in the meeting. In her role, the environment minister Yasmin Fouad reviewed the first updated report on nationally-specific contributions.
She also noted that this comes in the wake of a joint declaration—during the events of the COP27 climate summit—between the governments of Egypt, Germany and the United States to accelerate the energy transformation in Egypt.
Furthermore, Dr Yasmin Fouad presented the importance of the procedures taken on carbon emissions certification, noting that the output of the recent Sharm El-Sheikh climate summit included laying down operational rules to start implementation of Article Six of the Paris Agreement on carbon mechanisms, which was also announced as a part of the activation of the platform A number of measures have been taken.
Minister Yasmin Fouad extended her remarks and stated, “These procedures included the issuance of Prime Minister’s Resolution No. 4664 for 2022, amending some provisions of the Capital Law Executive Regulation. She added that the formation of a committee of supervision and oversight on emissions reduction certificates and the first meeting of the Oversight Committee was held on April 13.
“The joint announcement ensures submission of an updated version of national contributions by June 2023, including an increase in renewable energy contribution to electricity generation to 42% by 2030 instead of 2035. the minister added.
She explained that the joint announcement also included the following:
- Reducing reliance on natural gas in the electricity sector.
- Starting the development of green hydrogen.
- Studying the possibility of establishing and adopting an ambitious long-term strategy for 2050 to reach carbon neutrality targets and assuring support for the energy axis in the Novi program.
The meeting was also attended by Dr Mohammed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engr. Tariq Al-Mulla, Minister of Oil and Minerals; Dr Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Planning and Economic Development; Dr Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment; Mr Al-Qasir, Minister of Agriculture and Reform Lands.
Along with Major General Hisham Amna, Minister of Local Development, Dr Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water and Irrigation, Ambassador Mohammed Nasr, Director of Environment and Sustainable Development Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Khaled Nouvel, Assistant to First Minister of Finance for Administrative Development, Mrs Randa Hamza, Assistant Minister of International Cooperation, and Ministries and stakeholders officials.
