Football: Iran qualifies for third consecutive World Cup, becomes 14th team

After bagging win against Iraq, Iran has 19 points from seven games. The country was two points ahead of South Korea, which is on the border of a tenth successive World Cup appearance. South Korea won its last match against Lebanon, with 1-0.

However, South Korea would be eligible to play in the world cup 2022, with a win against Syria on Tuesday.

According to the qualification criteria, the top two teams of each group will qualify for the tournament and the teams in third place will advance to a playoff.

Whereas in Group B, Australia and Japan are the winning teams, and the pressure lies on Saudi Arabia. Australia has won against Vietnam by 4-0 in Melbourne, and Japan defeated China by 2-0 in Saitama. If we talk about China, it is nine points behind Australia, having three matches to play.

On the scoreboard, Japan is in second place, Australia is in third, and Saudi Arabia’s position would depend on its game against Oman on Thursday.

Apparently, the Aussies have been playing without their coach Graham Arnold as he was tested positive for Covid-19 and has been currently under isolation.

The teams which have qualified for World Cup 2022 are – Qatar, Iran, Germany, Denmark, Brazil, France, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Serbia, England, Switzerland, Netherlands and Argentina.
