Ghibli-Style Avatars Go Viral, But Experts Warn of Data Risks

Solling warned that AI avatar platforms might store high-resolution images, risking identity theft if leaked. Additionally, embedded metadata could unintentionally reveal sensitive details like device information and user location

A new internet trend has taken social media by storm, as users transform their personal photos into dreamy, hand-drawn illustrations reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s iconic animation style.

However, while these AI-generated avatars allow for artistic self-expression, cybersecurity experts are raising serious concerns over potential risks to users’ sensitive data.

Nicolai Solling, Chief Technology Officer at Help AG, has warned about the security implications tied to uploading facial images onto AI-driven platforms.

“When creating avatars, users often upload photos that capture detailed facial features, which can include biometric data that is irreplaceable if compromised,” he said.

Biometric Data at Risk

Unlike passwords that can be changed after a security breach, facial features are permanent, making them particularly vulnerable to misuse.

Solling explained that AI avatar platforms may store high-resolution images, potentially exposing users to identity theft or fraud if such data is leaked in a cyberattack.

Additionally, the metadata embedded in uploaded images could unintentionally disclose sensitive information such as device details and location.

“The risk of leaking personal details increases when these images are uploaded to avatar platforms,” Solling added.

He also highlighted that many AI platforms use user-generated content to train their models, raising concerns about data ownership and privacy.

“Unless users are paying for the service, their images, including facial data, may be used to train AI models,” he warned.

“The lack of transparency on these platforms means users may not fully understand how their data is being used or stored, leading to long-term consequences.”

Digital Identity and Security Concerns

Beyond data privacy, experts are also cautioning about the growing reliance on avatars for digital interactions.

“The use of AI-generated avatars could diminish our ability to recognize individuals in the way we traditionally do, which is crucial for authentication,” Solling said. “If not managed properly, this trend could erode trust and personal identity in digital spaces.”

Social media strategist Sarah Johnson echoed these concerns, warning that user engagement with these avatars may come at the cost of security.

“While these avatars allow for creativity and self-expression, users must remain vigilant about potential privacy implications,” she said. “It’s essential to educate users on how their data is utilized and to encourage them to review privacy settings on these platforms.”

She further noted that the excitement surrounding Ghibli-style avatars might lead users to overlook privacy risks.

“Brands and platforms need to provide transparency about data handling practices to build trust. It’s crucial that as this trend grows, we prioritize user education to mitigate risks,” Johnson stated.

Fans Divided Over AI-Generated Art

While many users embrace this trend, others are opting out due to ethical and artistic concerns. Eiman Idris, an e-commerce specialist and long-time admirer of Studio Ghibli, expressed her reservations about AI-generated art.

“I won’t consider myself a die-hard fan of Studio Ghibli, but I grew up watching their incredible films,” she shared. “That studio is filled with creativity that inspires me. I even named our family car after one of their characters.”

Idris explained her choice to avoid AI-generated Ghibli avatars. “Part of me is a creative person, and I appreciate all forms of art.”

“When I came across Mr. Miyazaki’s opinion on AI-generated art, it felt like an attack on anyone who respects artists. Getting inspired by other artists doesn’t mean just copying and pasting AI-generated results. I don’t see this trend as true self-expression.”

As the debate over AI-generated art continues, the popularity of Ghibli-style avatars shows no signs of slowing down.

However, experts emphasize the need for users to remain cautious, understand the implications of their data usage, and take necessary precautions to protect their privacy in the digital age.
