The International Atomic Energy Agency and the Government of Egypt recently signed a joint action program. This collective Joint action programme is aimed at facilitating the smooth transition of Egypt to become a low-carbon economy. The program also aimed to enhance energy production along with the reduction of carbon emissions.
Tariq Al-Mullah, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt, and Dr. Fateh Birol, the Executive President of the International Energy Agency, signed the statement documents in this regard.
Both have signed the document in the presence of Ambassador Alaa Youssef, the Egyptian Ambassador in France, via video conference mode. “Joint Action Program between Egypt and the International Energy Agency” aimed to support Egypt’s effort to transition to a low-carbon economy and diversify Energy mixing by expanding renewable energy production.
This joint action program includes six main areas. These six areas include formulation, supporting decarbonization programs and plans, efforts to expand renewable energy and hydrogen production, supporting statistical data analysis capabilities and sustainability of data supply in the energy sector, improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon, and studying the effects of climate change on the energy sector.
IAEA and Egypt also agreed to prioritize program Training and capability building for sustainable development. Egyptian minister Mulla emphasized that Egypt knows well the importance of its role in the Mediterranean region.
Minister also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Egyptian government and the International Energy Agency in terms of reducing emissions and speeding up the increase of the production of new and renewable Energy and hydrogen in the light of the Agency’s experience, data and programs in this framework . He said that Egyptian
Government has a serious desire and strong will and an ambitious program to increase the role of renewable energy And environmental compliance projects that achieve sustainable development.
Dr. Fateh Birol also stressed on the importance of mutual cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA, valuing the important role of the Egyptian political leadership and Government during the current crisis in Palestine.
Moreover Birol also invited the Egyptian minister to attend the International Energy Agency’s golden jubilee celebration marking its 50th anniversary in Paris next February.
It is worth noting that Egypt joined as a co-member of the Agency in 2022 and is the second country in the Middle East and North Africa region to join the Agency as a co-member.
