The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudan, hold a joint Press Conference in Tehran. The Prime minister of Iraq is on an official visit to Iran. Both leaders discussed many issues of bilateral importance, including the case of the Israel-Hamas war.
Iraq’s PM said an official visit is important due to the current sensitive regional circumstances, and he underlined the depth of the relationship between the two countries for a long time.
It is to be specifically mentioned that During discussions with Iraq’s PM and the President of Iran, the Palestinian issue took centre stage. Both criticised the systematic killings and genocide inflicted upon the Palestinian people in Gaza. They also expressed concern over the situation in the West Bank.
Prime Minister said I emphasise Iraq’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue and the struggle of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state.
Additionally, he said Iraq’s position is unequivocal, and it has been articulated by religious authorities, especially the Supreme Religious Authority in Najaf Al-Ashraf, and by national political forces. He said Iraq has shown its stand and support on multiple forums, most recently at the Cairo Conference.
PM, during his address, said that the recent crisis did not arise from the events of October 7 but is a consequence of the criminal policies and atrocities pursued by the occupying authorities of Israel against the Palestinians. He also underscored that The international community and the international system have failed to deter the Israelis from committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Iraq remains actively engaged in its diplomatic role and ongoing communication with influential nations in the region to end the conflict, PM added.
On the other hand, the President of Iran said that Iran has contributed to supporting Gaza by sending relief convoys transporting food and medical aid through the Rafah Border Crossing in Egypt.
President Raisi also stated that ” the positions of Iraq and Iran are aligned on this issue, and we will continue to communicate to achieve the most important goal, which is an immediate ceasefire in Gaza”.
Many opportunities exist to establish economic partnerships, particularly in the development sector in both countries, leaders expressed during joint statements.
It is to be added that the Iraqi-Iranian Joint Security Committee successfully fulfilled its responsibilities in the border regions, resolving all sources of tension and eliminating many threats to both countries.
