As the summer break comes to an end, educational institutions across the UAE are meticulously preparing to welcome students back to school on Monday, August 26.
Following an almost two-month-long summer hiatus that began on July 8, schools are deploying various strategies to ensure a smooth and efficient transition for students, parents, and staff.
Welcome Packs and Orientation Websites
To kick off the new academic year, schools are sending out comprehensive welcome packs to parents. These packs include vital information about the upcoming school year, from login details for school applications to homeroom assignments.
Simon Herbert, Head of School and CEO of GEMS International School – Al Khail, highlighted the importance of these resources.
“We’ve prepared a comprehensive new parent orientation website, which is part of the ‘welcome pack’ sent to all parents before the start of school.
In addition, all students receive an ICT pack containing their logins for apps and homeroom details a week before school begins,” said Herbert.
Addressing First-Day Traffic Challenges
One of the significant challenges on the first day of school is managing traffic congestion. Schools are taking proactive measures to address this issue by coordinating with neighboring institutions to implement staggered start times.
This strategy aims to ease the traffic flow and reduce the stress of drop-offs and pick-ups.
“To ensure a smooth and stress-free experience, we have implemented staggered start times with our neighboring schools and designated drop-off and pick-up zones.”
“This information, along with a detailed traffic management plan, is included in the welcome kits and will be shared with our parents. We encourage parents to familiarize themselves with these details to help minimize congestion and ensure everyone’s safety,” added Herbert.
Reinstating Routine and Sleep Patterns
Head teachers across the UAE are advising parents to gradually reinstate their children’s routines to facilitate a seamless transition back to school.
Fatima Martin, Principal of GEMS New Millennium School – Al Khail, emphasized the importance of adjusting sleep patterns and daily habits.
“During the holidays, children often adopt different sleep patterns and daily habits, which can make returning to a structured school day challenging. We encourage parents to start re-establishing regular bedtimes and wake-up times at least two weeks before school begins,” said Martin.
Establishing Homework Habits
In addition to reinstating sleep routines, Martin also highlighted the importance of establishing homework habits and engaging in discussions about the upcoming school year.
This preparation helps students get back into the academic mindset and reduces the stress associated with returning to school.
“Our welcome back communications encourage parents and students to adjust bedtimes, practice morning routines, establish homework habits, and engage in discussions about the upcoming school year,” she added.
Special Orientation for New Students
To help new students acclimate to their new environment, schools are organizing special orientation days. These days allow newcomers to explore the campus, meet teachers, and familiarize themselves with the school layout.
Such initiatives are tailored to meet the diverse needs of the school community, ensuring that both returning and new families feel welcomed and informed.
“For new families, we introduce our staff, outline procedures, and address frequently asked questions, while all parents receive reminders and information guides to help ease the transition after the summer break,” said Martin.
Submission of Holiday Homework
In Indian curriculum schools, principals stress the importance of submitting holiday homework on time. This practice ensures that teachers can prepare students for upcoming lessons and facilitates a smoother transition when school reopens.
Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International School, explained the rationale behind holiday homework.
“We guide parents to follow a routine for studies throughout the summer vacation or else children come back to school washed out after such a long break. Hence, we have the idea of holiday homework. Holiday Homework must be submitted on the first two days of the school reopening, so that’s non-negotiable. This instruction is always part of our school routine.”
Emphasizing Punctuality and Attendance
School leaders emphasize the importance of punctuality and attendance during the first week of school. This period is crucial for students and parents to reacquaint themselves with the school’s rules, procedures, and expectations.
“A welcome mail is already ready for the parents and the children. A social media post is also ready for release before the school reopens.”
“The Form Tutor will send a welcome kit to all new joiners with important manuals and the reading program. My mail to parents, staff, and students will contain the welcome note with instructions for the first day and the first week,” said Singh.
Conclusion
As the UAE’s educational institutions gear up for the new school year, the meticulous preparations and proactive measures taken by schools demonstrate their commitment to providing a smooth and welcoming transition for students and parents alike.
With comprehensive welcome packs, staggered start times, and a focus on reinstating routines, schools are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the first day back and ensure a successful start to the academic year.
