Motorists in the UAE could soon benefit from an innovative advancement in electric vehicle (EV) charging technology, as Adnoc Distribution, the leading fuel retailer in the region, has introduced a cutting-edge autonomous robotic arm at Gitex Global.

“We are working on autonomous EV charging: A robotic arm that can identify the car, initiate the charging session, connect the charge, and then disconnect on its own completely autonomously and robotically, using advanced artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.
According to Qureshi, the project reflects the company’s commitment to embracing new technology as the industry evolves towards AI adoption, robotics, and greater mobility convenience.
Expansion of the EV Charging Network
As part of its strategy to support the growing demand for electric vehicles in the region, Adnoc Distribution has been steadily expanding its EV charging infrastructure.
During the first half of 2024, the company doubled its network of fast and super-fast charging stations, bringing the total number of charging points to over 100.
This expansion aligns with Adnoc Distribution’s target of reaching between 150 to 200 charging points by the end of the year, ensuring widespread access to EV charging facilities across the UAE.
The company has been ramping up its efforts to accommodate the increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads, aiming to enhance customer experience through technological innovation.
In addition to expanding the EV charging network, Adnoc Distribution added 10 new service stations across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt in the first half of 2024, raising the total number to 847. “At the moment, it is a proof of concept as it is in early technology. It is a bit complex because it has to be programmed to reach the car,” Lane said.
“It is not something we foresee rolling out in the near future but in the longer future. If you have an autonomous electric vehicle, ideally you should have an autonomous charging mechanism. Through this, we can create truly a manless fully integrated ecosystem where you have an autonomous driving car to autonomous charger.”
The robotic arm is designed to be weatherproof and able to operate under extreme temperatures, making it suitable for use in the UAE’s harsh climate.
Despite these advancements, the integration of autonomous robotic charging at a large scale presents technical challenges, particularly in ensuring that the technology can adapt to different vehicle models and charging ports.
