Dr Suelm outlined the following key points:
– Numerous measures to achieve the principles of the government in the administration to face water challenges
– The new Water Resources and Irrigation Law aims to form water user links, activate their role and enhance communication between beneficiaries and executives
– Important role for local communities in providing nature-based solutions to address challenges facing the water sector and coastal areas
– The importance of interconnection between water, energy, and food to achieve food security and to face water and food challenges in Egypt and the world
– The future will witness the expansion of the desalination of water for food production to meet the population increase, provided that the water unit is used optimally, which achieves economic efficiency
On the verge of participating in the World Water Week in Stockholm, Professor Dr Hani Suelm, Minister of Water and Irrigation, participated in the session “Following up the results of the United Nations Water Conference”.
According to the reports, during the discussion held in the session, as for strengthening governance principles especially in the area of adaptation to climate change and nature-based solutions. Dr Suelm pointed out that Egypt faces many challenges in the water field as a result of the limited water resources, as Egypt is approaching the water supply line with a share of nearly 500 cubic meters per person per year, which is necessary to take many steps to achieve the principles of the government in the administration to address these challenges, where the issue of the Water Resources and Water Law and its executive list, which includes a number of articles to form water user links and activate its role to achieve more community participation in water management, the law also aims to strengthen and facilitate communication between beneficiaries on the sub-region and private provinces, executive agencies of the ministry and other ministries and concerned authorities .
He also noted the significant role of local communities in providing nature-based solutions to address challenges facing the water sector and coastal areas, referring to what was achieved in the project “Enhancing adaptation to the effects of climate change on the Northern Coast and the Nile Delta” with a total length of about 69 km in five governorates Coastal, where this project features the implementation of leading experiments using low-cost techniques and environmentally friendly materials from the environment surrounding the project area in protection work by creating a number of beach bridges to protect low lying areas, creating long lines (post fences) as sand barriers and constructing vertical rows On it, where sand barriers are used to collect sand and reduce sand loss by wind during storms, the local community has participated in the production of post fencing that integrates the local community into the project and achieves sustainability.
Regarding the correlation between water and climate, the ability to endurance, and the balance between human needs and the preservation of natural resources. Dr Suelm stressed the importance of water, energy, and food interconnection to achieve food security and meet the many challenges facing the water and food sectors in Egypt and the world, while boosting cooperation between countries under the umbrella of the “Water, Energy, and Food Interconnection”, indicating that the future will see the expansion use of water in production Food to counter population increase, provided you use water unit optimally which achieves economic efficiency, with the importance of expanding the use of modern technology and renewable energy in sweetening which will contribute to reducing cost.
