Russia and Iran are taking up bilateral relations towards a  trusting environment, Russia’s foreign ministry said early on Tuesday.

This statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry came after its chief, Sergei Lavrov, was received by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during a visit to Iran, one of the major and influential countries of the Middle East.

“In a traditionally warm and honest atmosphere, current aspects of the bilateral agenda were substantively discussed during the meeting of the Iranian president and Russian foreign minister with an emphasis on further building up the entire complex of multifaceted Russian-Iranian partnership,” the foreign ministry further said in a statement.

Russian foreign minister Lavrov went to Tehran shortly after his Asia trip to China and North Korea and also discussed energy and logistics projects with Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian.

Lavrov, during his Iran visit, also participated in regional talks hosted by Iran, aiming to bring peace to the South Caucasus region after Azerbaijani forces last month recaptured the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh and forced thousands of ethnic Armenians to flee from the Area.

It is to be added specifically that Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has sought to improve its ties with countries traditionally considered Western aligned, accusing “the collective West” of trying to destroy Russia.

On the other hand, Ukraine had urged Tehran to stop supplying deadly drones to Russia, which Kyiv says has played a major role in Moscow’s attacks on Ukrainian cities and caused huge devastation.
Iran firstly denied supplying the Shahid kamikaze drones to Russia but later said it had provided a small number before Moscow started the full-fledged war.
The United States has stated that it has been concerned by the “burgeoning defence partnership” between Iran and Russia, which poses risks not only to Ukraine but also to Iran’s neighbours in the Middle East.
