UAE’s Lowest Temperature: Chilly 4.3°C Recorded on Jebel Jais

As the UAE celebrated the arrival of 2024, temperatures plummeted to a frigid 4.3°C on Jebel Jais, the nation’s highest peak, marking the lowest reading in the country early Tuesday morning

Ras Al Khaimah, UAE — Temperatures plummeted to a frigid 4.3°C on Jebel Jais, the nation’s highest peak, marking the lowest reading in the country early Tuesday morning.

Recorded at 3:15 am, this temperature heralded the onset of cooler weather conditions predicted to persist throughout the week, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

Despite chilly starts to the mornings, daytime temperatures remained pleasant across much of the UAE, with the mercury climbing to a comfortable 29°C in internal areas.

The NCM has warned, however, of increased humidity at night and into Wednesday morning, potentially leading to mist formation, particularly in interior regions.

Winter Weather Patterns Take Hold

Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert, highlighted the arrival of winter conditions during an earlier interview with Khaleej Times. “Starting from December 16, the region began experiencing north-westerly winds bringing cooler air masses,” he said.

“This has led to a gradual temperature decrease of 5-7°C, beginning in the western areas and spreading across the country.”

Winter in the UAE officially began on December 22, and the colder temperatures are expected to persist into January.

According to the traditional Arabian Gulf calendar, the season is divided into two 40-day periods: “Arba in Al Merei,” commencing around December 28 and characterized by intense cold and rainfall, and “Arba in Al Aqrabi,” which follows.

The coldest days historically occur between January 16 and 18. “Interior regions, particularly at night, are significantly affected by cold air masses, leading to sharp temperature drops,” Dr. Habib added.

Dry Winter Season Likely to Continue

This winter season is shaping up to be drier than usual, with minimal rainfall recorded so far. Dr. Habib noted similarities to previous dry winters, such as those in 2001 and 2020, when rain was sparse and infrequent.

“Rainfall during this period is influenced by several factors,” he explained. “While the winter season generally brings a higher chance of rain, its actual occurrence depends on the specific atmospheric conditions at the time.”

The NCM’s latest forecasts suggest that cooler conditions will persist, though significant rainfall is unlikely in the immediate future.

A Chilly Start to 2024

Jebel Jais, located in Ras Al Khaimah, remains a popular destination for residents and tourists seeking to experience the UAE’s winter charm. The drop to 4.3°C on New Year’s Eve reinforced its reputation as one of the coldest spots in the country.

As residents across the UAE enjoy cooler daytime temperatures, they are reminded to prepare for potentially misty conditions in the mornings and maintain caution while driving.

The UAE’s winter offers a welcome reprieve from the intense heat of summer, but experts advise staying alert to changes in weather conditions, especially during the transition periods when temperatures and humidity can fluctuate significantly.

With clear skies and cooler days on the horizon, the UAE’s unique winter season is now fully underway, promising a refreshing start to the new year.
