Runner’s Epic Journey from Dubai to Jeddah Raises Funds for Cancer Fighters

There was no crowd waiting to congratulate him. The finish line was marked by a quiet personal moment rather than a public celebration. Yet, this silent triumph spoke volumes about his determination, as he set out to make a real difference for those in need

Vilius Pakalniskis’s month-long solo run from Dubai to Jeddah, a grueling 2,100 kilometers under the scorching desert sun and the eerie silence of empty roads, wasn’t just a feat of endurance. It was a mission for a cause: raising funds for children battling cancer in the UAE.

The 28-year-old Lithuanian fitness trainer, a man known for embracing challenges, completed the journey on December 12, covering around 70 kilometers every day.

As he sat exhausted on a sandy beach in Jeddah, the weight of what he had accomplished seemed to hit him all at once.

“I could not open the bottle, I had no energy left. I was sitting there on the beach, looking at the bottle and crying,” Pakalniskis recalled.

There was no crowd waiting to congratulate him. The finish line was marked by a quiet personal moment rather than a public celebration. Yet, this silent triumph spoke volumes about his determination, as he set out to make a real difference for those in need.

Pakalniskis wasn’t alone in this endeavor. Accompanying him were two volunteers, British national Tarren Hillier and Russian expatriate Dmitrii Faterin, who had joined him on the journey to provide logistical support and help document the epic run.

Hillier took charge of Pakalniskis’ diet, while Faterin, who doubled as the videographer, drove the caravan, ensuring the runner had the necessary supplies.

While the journey was never meant to be a spectacle, the emotional weight of the achievement left all three men overwhelmed at its conclusion.

Pakalniskis, who had envisioned such an endeavor for over three years, expressed gratitude for his team’s support. “It was mission accomplished for all of us,” he said, referring to the close-knit trio.

The idea for this remarkable feat began to take shape when Pakalniskis visited the Al Jalila Foundation in Dubai, a health organization that promotes medical research and education.

It was there that he met Carla Duarte, the director of partnerships at the foundation, who, being a runner herself, immediately understood Pakalniskis’ vision.

Their shared passion for running and a cause-driven purpose led to the launch of Project Coast to Coast, a campaign aiming to raise Dh250,000 for young cancer patients in the UAE.

Pakalniskis’s training regimen was as intense as the run itself. “A lot of my training was very boring, long hours, easy runs, nothing intense, just constant running,” he explained.

Running 200 kilometers each week, he gradually ramped up his physical preparation, pushing through pain and exhaustion to ready himself for the toughest leg of the journey.

On November 13, Pakalniskis set out on his journey, running daily from Dubai to Al Ain, then on to Abu Dhabi and eventually crossing into Saudi Arabia. The road to Jeddah proved to be more mentally taxing than he had imagined.

“There were no streetlights on the Saudi highway, just dunes and big trucks. It was a mental thing for me,” Pakalniskis said.

He ran through long stretches of dark, isolated roads with only the occasional truck to keep him company. The harsh winds, intense heat, and physical strain from running every day made the challenge even more daunting.

Despite these obstacles, Pakalniskis pushed on, relying on a diet of sweet potatoes, chicken, pasta, and coffee, along with seven liters of water each day.

The pain in his hips, swollen ankle, and lower back became constant companions, yet he persevered, driven by his purpose to complete the run. “I kept telling myself that I would not remember the pain, I would only remember the moment of joy when I finish,” he said.

As the team reached the final stretch in Jeddah, the exhaustion became unbearable. “The last 20 kilometers were the hardest,” Pakalniskis admitted, adding that the intense physical pain was overwhelming.

But he managed to push through, and once he crossed the finish line, he was overwhelmed with disbelief. The joy of completing such an immense challenge for a worthy cause was a bittersweet moment.

After finishing, Pakalniskis celebrated by diving into the sea, shoes on, as a symbolic gesture of victory. The onlookers, unsure of what was happening, watched as he and his friends captured the emotional moment on camera.

“It didn’t feel real,” he said of the experience. The trio had achieved something monumental, and now their journey will be immortalized in a documentary they hope will inspire future generations.

Reflecting on the journey, Pakalniskis emphasized the connections made along the way, especially the kindness of strangers.

He recalled the hospitality of a man named Adnan, who, upon learning about their cause, booked a hotel for them and invited them to his home. “Those were the moments that will remain in our hearts forever,” Pakalniskis shared.

While the run may be over, its impact is just beginning. Pakalniskis and his team hope the documentary will help raise further awareness and inspire others to take on their own challenges, especially for those who need it most.
