Abu Dhabi Police Warn Against Sudden Stops After Two Serious Accidents

A pickup truck carrying mattresses lost one on the highway, creating panic among drivers. While many swerved to avoid it, one white sedan abruptly stopped, leading to a collision with an approaching water delivery truck, resulting in serious damage

Abu Dhabi, UAE – In a stark reminder of road safety protocols, two separate accidents in Abu Dhabi have raised alarms after drivers unexpectedly halted their vehicles due to hazards, resulting in serious crashes.

A video released by the Abu Dhabi Police on Friday showcased the incidents, which could have been avoided had the drivers opted to maneuver around the obstacles instead of coming to a complete stop.

The first accident occurred when a pickup truck, laden with mattresses, was traveling down the highway. One of the mattresses flew off the vehicle, causing panic among nearby drivers. While most opted to swerve and change lanes to avoid the obstacle, one white sedan came to a sudden halt, directly in the path of a water delivery truck.

The collision was severe, with the delivery truck flipping onto its side and narrowly missing other motorists on the busy road. In a second incident captured on video, several steel rods rolled onto the highway, presenting another unexpected hazard.

While most drivers successfully navigated the situation by driving over the rods, one white van abruptly stopped, leading to a rear-end collision with another vehicle. The footage highlights the critical importance of maintaining awareness on the road and reacting appropriately to unexpected dangers.

The Abu Dhabi Police emphasized the dangers of stopping in the middle of the road, warning that such actions constitute a traffic offense punishable by a Dh1,000 fine and six traffic black points.

In a statement accompanying the video, police officials urged drivers to avoid distractions and focus solely on the task of driving. “Just avoid such unexpected hazards on the roads; do not stop for any reason,” they stated.

Brigadier Mahmoud Yousef Al Balushi, director of the Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate, offered further guidance on handling emergencies.

He stressed the importance of using designated emergency bays in the event of a vehicle breakdown, advising motorists to use the right shoulder only in cases of extreme necessity. “Use the four-way warning signals and then head to the nearest exit,” he recommended.

These incidents come as a part of the ongoing efforts by the Abu Dhabi Police to enhance road safety awareness among motorists.

The footage serves as a potent reminder of the potential consequences of poor decision-making while driving. With the New Year just around the corner, authorities are particularly concerned about increased traffic and the need for heightened vigilance on the roads.

As celebrations ramp up across the emirate, drivers are urged to remain alert and avoid hazardous situations. “Stay focused, and remember that quick reactions can save lives,” the police concluded.

In a city that continuously strives for the safety of its residents, the Abu Dhabi Police’s warning underscores the importance of responsible driving, especially when faced with unexpected road conditions.

The consequences of recklessness can be severe, as illustrated by these recent accidents, reinforcing the need for caution and awareness behind the wheel.
