US-based aerospace company Archer Aviation has confirmed that its highly anticipated flying taxi service is on track for launch in the UAE later this year.
The company, known for its electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, announced this development on Tuesday as part of its first quarterly results.
According to Archer Aviation, it plans to deliver its piloted Midnight aircraft to the UAE this summer. The Midnight aircraft is designed to revolutionize urban mobility, offering a quicker, more sustainable alternative to traditional road transport.
Once operational, the eVTOLs are expected to significantly reduce travel times between major cities, with a journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi potentially taking just 10 to 20 minutes.
“We are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and reshaping the future of aviation for years to come,” said Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer Aviation.
“This quarter, the team made strong progress across our civil and defense efforts as we continue to deepen our strategic partner relationships and prepare for commercialization in the UAE later this year.”
The launch is further supported by Archer’s efforts to secure the necessary regulatory approvals. In a significant development, the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) granted Archer design approval for the first hybrid heliport in the country, which will be located at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal at Zayed Port.
This heliport is set to become a key part of Archer’s operations, serving as a hub for flying taxi operations. The location was chosen for its strategic position as a major cruise industry center, welcoming over 650,000 visitors annually.
Additionally, Archer has been collaborating closely with the GCAA to establish a regulatory framework that will expedite the launch of eVTOL services in the UAE. These efforts have been part of the country’s broader strategy to diversify its transport options and reduce congestion, especially in urban areas.
In the previous quarter, Archer rolled out its “Launch Edition” program and secured its first customers for the air taxi service, including Abu Dhabi Aviation and Ethiopian Airlines.
The launch of air taxis aligns with the UAE’s ambitious plans to explore new forms of transportation, including flying cars and high-speed rail networks, as part of efforts to accommodate the country’s rapidly growing population and alleviate traffic congestion.
Once the air taxi service is operational, the cost of a ride from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is expected to range between Dh800 and Dh1,500, offering a fast and futuristic mode of transport for residents and visitors alike.
To support the transition to operational flights, the initial training of pilots is already underway, with Archer’s Midnight simulator delivered to Etihad Aviation Training in Abu Dhabi.
In addition to Archer’s efforts, competitor Joby Aviation is also in talks with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai to roll out a similar air taxi network in the emirate.
Joby announced in November 2024 the construction of the first vertiport in Dubai, signaling the city’s commitment to becoming a leader in the future of urban air mobility.
As the UAE continues to embrace cutting-edge technologies, the launch of flying taxis represents a significant step towards reshaping the future of transportation in the region. With major developments underway, the skies above the UAE could soon become home to the world’s most advanced and sustainable urban mobility solutions.
