Dominica: PM Skerrit meets Thea Lafond, congratulates her for Paris Victory

Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica  received Thea Lafond, Olympic gold medalist at his office on August 27.

Olympic Gold Medalists Thea Lafond met with Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit at his office following her grand welcome in Dominica. The meeting was part of the activities scheduled for the celebration of her victory at Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

During the meeting, PM Skerrit discussed several ways of improving the sports sector of Dominica and asked for the suggestion for Thea Lafond to develop the efficient structure.

During her visit to the PM’s office  she was accompanied by her husband and coach Aaron Gadson. The PM extended a warm reception to Thea Lafond and her husband on their first visit to his office after returning from Paris. According to the PM he felt heppy to receive the golden girl at his office.

It is to be noted that she returned to Dominica on August 24. Large-scale events were organized to welcome her and celebrate the historic moment for the country. A welcome rally was held at Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt and the Prime Minister joined this rally. At the rally the Prime Minister  on the Government’s behalf announced several awards and recognition.

At the celebration rally the PM also handed over Thea Lafond a cash prize worth $400,000. He announced to appoint her as the country’s international sports ambassador to encourage youth participation in sports.

The PM’s meeting with Thea Lafond witnessed detailed discussion about promoting sports. The discussion also touched upon issues of upcoming programs, schemes  and plans that the government proposed to implement. Improvement of sports infrastructure was discussed as a priority. The Government has already announced that the a Track & Field Complex will be named after Thea LaFond-Gadson.

The PM shared glimpses of this meeting on his social media handles. The Social media user reacting to the PM’s post congratulated her and extended best wishes.A Facebook user Zahra Georges called her source of inspiration and commented, “Thea inspires all Dominicans to strive for excellence.”
