Dubai Customs has successfully intercepted a significant smuggling attempt, seizing 147.4 kilograms of narcotic and psychotropic substances at one of the emirate’s strategic seaports.
The operation, led by highly trained inspection teams, prevented the illicit cargo from entering Dubai, marking a major security triumph in the ongoing fight against cross-border drug trafficking.
The discovery was made during a detailed inspection of a transiting shipment flagged for irregularities using advanced screening technology. Upon closer scrutiny, aided by the elite K9 Unit, officers confirmed the presence of the concealed narcotics.
This successful interception has been lauded as a key example of Dubai’s robust border protection systems and the growing integration of smart technologies in customs operations.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, praised the vigilance and professionalism of the customs officers involved in the seizure.
“This milestone reflects the ongoing advancement of our customs framework—one that integrates advanced technologies, skilled personnel, and proactive strategies to secure our borders. Dubai remains resilient in the face of criminal networks,” he said.
He further emphasised the frontline role played by Dubai Customs officers, noting their dedication to protecting the emirate from security threats.
“With the ongoing support of our leadership, we will continue to invest in innovation, refine our strategies, and enhance training programmes to remain one of the world’s most advanced customs authorities.”
The seized shipment posed a serious threat to both public health and national security. Thanks to the use of sophisticated screening tools and the swift coordination between human intelligence and canine detection capabilities, the operation successfully neutralised the potential risk before it could breach Dubai’s borders.
Dr Abdulla Mohammed Busenad, Director General of Dubai Customs, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the department’s unwavering commitment to global customs standards.
“Dubai Customs’ inspectors continue to set a global benchmark for professionalism, readiness, and operational excellence. Their work is critical in safeguarding our land, sea, and air borders,” he said.
Dr Busenad also stressed the importance of ongoing investment in both technological infrastructure and human capital.
“Our ability to counter security threats is significantly enhanced by our leadership’s commitment to technological advancement. Their investment in AI-driven detection systems equips us with unparalleled capabilities to combat illicit trade with precision,” he noted.
“Beyond infrastructure, our leadership’s vision extends to empowering and upskilling national talent. Through continuous training and specialised programmes, our teams are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to remain at the forefront of global customs practices.”
Legal procedures have been initiated against those involved, in accordance with national and international regulations.
This latest operation underlines Dubai Customs’ critical role in securing the UAE’s borders against illegal trade and trafficking. With ongoing advancements in detection technology, enhanced training, and a proactive security strategy, Dubai continues to reinforce its reputation as a regional leader in customs security and economic resilience.
