DUBAI — A new ticketless and fully automated parking system has been launched in certain areas of Dubai, promising a hassle-free experience for motorists.

The system, which eliminates the need for paper tickets or manual payments, has been implemented on the East Crescent of Palm Jumeirah, between the Rixos and Anantara hotels.

The advanced system, operated by private company Parkonic rather than the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) or public parking operator Parkin PJSC, uses a combination of sensors and on-ground cameras to capture vehicle licence plates as drivers enter and exit the parking area.

The technology determines the parking duration and automatically calculates the fees, allowing drivers to simply drive in, park, and drive out without delays.

Paid parking has been enforced in the area since 2022, with cashless parking metres installed earlier. However, this latest development marks a significant upgrade in convenience and efficiency.

On Wednesday, Khaleej Times tested the new system and reported a smooth experience with no waiting times.

The automated system eliminates the need for paper tickets, manual payments, or physical interactions, aligning with Dubai’s broader smart city initiatives aimed at enhancing convenience for residents and visitors.

Motorists can pay their parking fees digitally via the Parkonic app or other online payment methods linked to their vehicle registration.

The app also offers features such as real-time parking availability and navigation assistance to open slots, making it easier for drivers to find and secure parking spaces.

Ahmed Al Suwaidi, a Dubai resident who frequently visits Palm Jumeirah, expressed his satisfaction with the new system.

“It saves a lot of time and is very convenient, especially during peak hours when finding a spot and dealing with parking tickets can be stressful,” he said.

The introduction of this system comes as Dubai continues to invest in smart technologies to enhance urban mobility and sustainability.

In recent years, the city has rolled out various tech-driven solutions, including AI-powered traffic management systems and smart parking platforms across several districts.

According to a spokesperson from Parkonic, the positive feedback from users could lead to an expansion of the ticketless parking system to other high-traffic areas in Dubai.

“We are constantly exploring ways to improve the parking experience and reduce congestion. The implementation on Palm Jumeirah is just the beginning,” the spokesperson noted.

While the system has been praised for its efficiency, some residents have raised concerns about data privacy and the potential misuse of vehicle information.

In response, Parkonic assured that the captured data is securely encrypted and used strictly for parking fee calculations.

As Dubai moves towards becoming one of the world’s smartest cities, initiatives like ticketless parking are seen as a step forward in achieving seamless and integrated urban services. For motorists on Palm Jumeirah, the new system represents a welcome change that combines convenience with cutting-edge technology.
