Khorfakkan, UAE – Nestled in the mountains of Khorfakkan, the newly restored Najd Al Meqsar Resort is offering visitors a unique glimpse into the UAE’s rich past.

Built on a site over a century old, the resort has transformed seven historic houses into guest accommodations, blending traditional Emirati architecture with breathtaking natural surroundings.

Located within the Najd Al Meqsar village at an altitude of 220 meters above sea level, the resort offers an authentic cultural experience, free from modern-day luxuries.

There are no elevators, swimming pools, or lavish amenities commonly found in resorts. Instead, guests stay in traditional ‘Kareen Houses’, structures with triangular-shaped roofs made from palm fronds, constructed using clay and stones in homage to the country’s heritage.

Each house features a private outdoor seating area with panoramic views of the sea, arranged in a cascading manner to complement the natural landscape.

A Journey Through History

Najd Al Meqsar village is situated at the head of Wadi Shie, an area of significant archaeological importance. The wadi, on which the Rafisah Dam is built, has been home to ancient rock carvings that experts believe may date back to the Iron Age.

Historical records suggest that the area was once inhabited by a tribe that settled near the wadi, using its abundant water supply for the traditional ‘al falaj’ irrigation system.

However, seasonal flooding forced the community to construct homes on the mountain, surrounding the Al Meqsar Fortress for protection.

The fortress, built nearly 300 years ago, served as a watchtower to guard against intrusions from the Indian Ocean.

Along with the Al Rabi and Al Adwani Towers, it played a crucial role in the region’s defense. Guests staying at the resort can hike to these historical sites, retracing the steps of those who once lived there.

Restoration of Cultural Heritage

The project is a collaboration between the Authority for Initiatives Implementation (Mubadara) and Shurooq, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority.

Under the directives of Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the resort was part of a broader initiative launched in 2019 to restore areas of historical significance across Khorfakkan.

In addition to Najd Al Meqsar village, efforts were undertaken to refurbish the Khor Fakkan Fort, Al Adwani Tower, and other key landmarks, preserving the region’s architectural and cultural legacy.

The restoration process ensured that the original houses, of which only seven remained intact from the original 13, were carefully preserved.

These homes are believed to have provided shelter to tribespeople during the rainy season and were later used as refuge during the Portuguese occupation of the region.

A Retreat for Nature and History Enthusiasts

Visitors to the resort can also explore the Al Rafisah Dam area, which is accessible via a scenic trail. Meals are served at Wishi Restaurant, located below the mountain, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

By staying at Najd Al Meqsar, guests can immerse themselves in the UAE’s past while enjoying the tranquility of Khorfakkan’s rugged beauty—an experience that truly transports them back in time.
