Philip J Pierre, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, remembered the two Nobel prize winners of the country, Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott. Every year, Saint Lucian celebrates January 23 as Nobel Laureate Day, the birthday of Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott.
Sir Derek Alton Walcott was born on January 23 1930, in the Small Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia. He is known for the creation of unique poetry and playwriting.
Sir William Arthur Lewis’s birthday is also January 23. He was born in Saint Lucia on January 23, 1915. During his career, he also works as a professor at Princeton University in the USA.
It is to be specifically mentioned that Sir William Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize for his exceptional contribution to the field of economics. He was awarded with Nobel Prize in 1979.
Similarly, Sir Derek Alton Walcott was awarded with Nobel Prize in 1992 for Literature. PM Philip J Pierre also took to his social media handle to congratulate the citizens on this auspicious occasion.
In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Every year on January 23, Saint Lucians and the world have the honour of celebrating Nobel Laureate Day, which happens to be the birthdays of both Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott. ”
“Today and always, may we remember them not only for their numerous accolades but also for their invaluable contributions to shaping this world and the homage paid through their work to our beloved island, Saint Lucia,” the PM added.
Meanwhile, social media users also congratulated on this historic day. On user Marileen Baptiste, she commented, “Two Great Men, Continue to rest in Perfect Peace. Happy Birthday in Heaven”.
