Fatal Flash Flood in Wadi Tanuf

The victims, Khalid Al Mansouri and Salem Al Jarraf, both Emiratis, were part of a group of 16 climbers exploring Wadi Tanuf, a popular hiking destination known for its challenging terrain.

The group was navigating the area when a sudden deluge caused the flash flood. According to the Royal Oman Police, in addition to Al Mansouri and Al Jarraf, a UAE-based Arab expat and an Omani national were also killed in the incident.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the group was divided into two parts. Upon exiting their vehicle, some hikers fell behind.

In a valiant effort to assist those lagging, Al Mansouri and Al Jarraf retraced their steps to help their fellow climbers but were tragically overwhelmed by the rushing waters.

Brave and Compassionate

Khalid Al Suwaidi, a UAE-based trekker, recounted the incident. “The group was divided into two. When they exited the truck, some hikers lagged behind. In a brave act, Al Mansouri and Al Jarraf returned to help, but tragically, they were swept away by the floodwaters.”

Both Al Mansouri and Al Jarraf were seasoned hikers known for their adventurous spirit and commitment to helping others.

They had previously explored challenging terrains in Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, and Oman. Friends and acquaintances described them as individuals who often went out of their way to assist fellow hikers.

Personal Tributes and Community Impact

Ahmad, a 41-year-old resident of Ras Al Khaimah, shared his memories of Al Jarraf. “I’ve known Al Jarraf since we were kids; we are about the same age.”

Ahmad revealed that although he did not join the final trek, he was aware of the extensive preparation involved, which took two months and required a high level of fitness.

“Al Jarraf’s passion for hiking blossomed during the Covid-19 pandemic. With restrictions on gatherings, he and his friends took to exploring the outdoors, which deepened their love for hiking,” Ahmad added.

The news of their deaths has profoundly impacted those who knew them. Alia’a Zaghloul, who met the hikers briefly, recalled their helpful nature.

“On one hike, I felt exhausted, and Al Mansouri helped me by giving me his pole and offering me a snack,” she said. “Al Jarraf also helped a friend who was struggling on another hike. He turned back a long way to assist her.”

Remembrance and Farewell

Al Jarraf’s neighbor, who saw him just a week before the accident, reflected on his character. “I saw him at the traffic police station a day before he was set to go on vacation.

He was a good man, a loving father, and a good neighbor. People often said we looked alike and sometimes confused us.”

Al Mansouri, a former UAE handball player and javelin champion, and Al Jarraf, a dedicated adventure sports enthusiast, were both well-regarded in their communities.

Their funeral prayers were held in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah after their bodies were repatriated from Oman.

Community Reactions and Tributes

The hiking community and local residents have been deeply moved by the loss. Tributes have poured in from friends, family, and fellow adventurers, praising the victims for their kindness, bravery, and the positive impact they had on those around them.

The tragedy has highlighted the risks associated with adventure sports and the importance of preparedness and safety in such activities.

The incident has also prompted a renewed focus on safety measures and the need for hikers to be vigilant about weather conditions, particularly in areas prone to sudden weather changes.

As the community mourns the loss of these remarkable individuals, their legacy of courage and compassion will be remembered by all who knew them.
