UAE Bans Single-Use Plastics from 2026 in Green Push

Building on the 2024 ban of plastic bags and items like stirrers and Styrofoam containers, the minister called on all UAE residents and businesses to actively support efforts to eliminate unnecessary plastic and promote sustainable alternatives

The United Arab Emirates will implement a sweeping ban on the import, production, and trade of all single-use plastic products starting January 1, 2026, in a bold step to combat environmental degradation and plastic pollution.

The announcement was made on World Environment Day, June 5, by Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

“This builds upon the phased approach initiated in 2024 with the ban on plastic bags. This decisive action underscores our resolve and commitment to environmental stewardship, driving us towards a future where waste and pollution are designed out of our systems,” said Dr Amna during the official address.

The new regulation will expand the scope of the UAE’s plastic policy to include the ban of single-use plastic cups, lids, cutlery, food containers, and plates.

It follows an earlier ban that took effect on January 1, 2024, which prohibited the use of plastic bags and certain items such as stirrers, Styrofoam containers, straws, and cotton swabs.

The minister urged every resident and business in the UAE to actively participate in the movement to eliminate unnecessary plastic.

“Let us become active agents of change, leading a powerful movement towards thriving communities and a vibrant, resilient environment. Let us protect the land and the sea that are so integral to our lives, for ourselves, our loved ones, and for generations to come,” she said.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgency of addressing the global plastic crisis.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), plastic pollution has become an existential threat, contaminating water supplies, food sources, and the air we breathe. Microplastics—tiny plastic particles—have been found in human lungs, arteries, brains, and even breast milk.

The UNEP warned that global plastic consumption is expected to reach 516 million tonnes in 2025 and could surge to 1.2 billion tonnes annually by 2060 if current trends continue. Recycling, long touted as a solution, has fallen short of expectations.

Only nine per cent of plastics are currently recycled, and just 21 per cent are considered economically viable for recycling.

In her remarks, Dr Amna emphasised the UAE’s broader environmental goals, which include optimizing resource use across sectors such as green infrastructure, transportation, and food production. “We are resolutely committed to managing hazardous waste and aggressively reducing plastic waste at every level,” she stated.

The health toll of environmental degradation is also stark. The UN estimates that environmental factors contribute to approximately 13 million deaths worldwide each year, nearly half of which are linked to air pollution. The economic cost of poor air quality stands at an alarming $2.9 trillion annually.

With this latest policy, the UAE joins a growing list of nations taking significant action to phase out single-use plastics. The move is seen as critical not only for the country’s sustainability goals but also as a model for regional cooperation in environmental protection.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has pledged to support businesses and consumers in transitioning to sustainable alternatives over the next 18 months.
