In a significant advancement for environmental science and research, the UAE has launched the Emirates Polar Programme, a pioneering initiative to explore the Earth’s polar regions.

The mission will focus on the Arctic and Antarctic zones, areas critical to understanding climate change and environmental shifts.

Through the Emirates Polar Programme, the UAE is committing to a long-term exploration of these polar regions, which are vital in the study of global weather patterns, melting ice caps, and their impact on sea levels.

Mariam Almheiri, head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and chair of the UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee, highlighted the significance of this project in developing Emirati scientists’ expertise.

“We aim to equip our scientists with the necessary skills to actively participate in international polar missions and contribute to the global scientific community,” she said. “The project also strengthens our commitment to environmental sustainability and scientific innovation.”

By next year, the UAE will extend its reach to both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, a move that will bolster its growing presence on the international scientific stage.

The current mission, which is part of the program’s initial phase, focuses on Antarctica, with plans for a subsequent mission to the Arctic in the summer of 2025.

The polar research initiative is part of a broader strategy that has seen the establishment of the ‘Polar Research Centre’ at Khalifa University.

The centre is not only focused on research but also works on building strategic partnerships with global organizations, signing relevant treaties, and joining other international polar missions.

The UAE’s goal is to play a key role in the global conversation about climate change and environmental protection, with a particular emphasis on the polar regions’ rapid transformation.

The mission is a collaboration between several key institutions, including the International Affairs Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, the National Centre of Meteorology, and Khalifa University.

These entities have worked together to define key research priorities for the program, ensuring the integration of scientific, technological, and commercial applications.

The development of this mission over the past year reflects the UAE’s growing ambition to lead in scientific research and environmental conservation.

Through its contributions to international polar missions, the UAE seeks to play a central role in addressing some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.

This project comes on the heels of the UAE’s broader efforts in sustainability, including the launch of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and its ongoing initiatives to combat climate change.

The Emirates Polar Programme is set to make the UAE a key player in polar research, driving scientific discoveries that could have far-reaching implications for understanding global climate patterns and protecting the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

As the UAE’s polar research mission kicks off, it signals the nation’s growing commitment to scientific exploration and environmental responsibility.

The mission’s success could open new doors for Emirati scientists to lead global initiatives in understanding and addressing the complex challenges facing the polar regions.
