UAE Residents Face Record Schengen Visa Rejections, Losing Dh16.8 Million in 2023

In 2023, UAE residents faced challenges in traveling to Europe, with Dh16.8 million (€4.19 million) lost on rejected Schengen visa applications. A report indicated a 22.44% denial rate, reflecting a 25% increase from the previous year

UAE residents eager to travel to Europe encountered significant setbacks in 2023, with a staggering Dh16.8 million (€4.19 million) reportedly wasted on rejected Schengen visa applications.

A recent report from Schengen Visa Info reveals that 22.44% of visa applications from the Emirates were denied last year, marking a 25% increase compared to 2022.

The report highlights that residents submitted a total of 233,932 Schengen visa applications in 2023, representing a notable rise of 24.97% from the previous year.

This surge made the UAE the 10th largest contributor to Schengen visa requests globally, accounting for 2.27% of the total submissions.

Up until June 11, 2024, applicants faced a fee of nearly Dh320 (€80) for a Schengen visa, not including additional service charges that vary by location.

However, following a recent announcement by the European Commission, the cost of Schengen visas will increase by 12% starting June 11, 2024, further complicating the situation for prospective travelers.

Among the Schengen nations, Germany emerged as the most sought-after destination for UAE residents, with 26,024 visa applications submitted.

Yet, this popularity came with a downside, as Germany also recorded the highest number of rejections—6,283 applications were denied. In stark contrast, Lithuania received the least interest, with only 327 applications.

Despite the high rejection rates, a significant number of visas were granted, with UAE residents receiving 177,213 Schengen visas in 2023. Spain topped the list for approvals, granting 20,843 visas with an encouraging approval rate of 80.09%.

Meanwhile, Poland stood out as the most accessible option for UAE travelers, boasting a remarkable approval rate of 90.61% for its 20,843 applications.

The rising rejection rates highlight ongoing challenges faced by UAE residents in their quest for European travel.

Experts attribute the increase in denial rates to stricter application scrutiny and evolving immigration policies within Schengen countries, which may lead to heightened frustrations among travelers.

As residents prepare for future applications, awareness of the evolving visa landscape becomes crucial.

While the Schengen visa allows for seamless travel across 27 European countries, the complexities of the application process could deter potential travelers from pursuing their European adventures.

In light of these developments, residents are urged to ensure that their applications are comprehensive and accurate to enhance their chances of approval.

Additionally, seeking guidance from visa consultancy services may help mitigate the risks of rejection and financial loss.

As the UAE continues to play a pivotal role in global travel trends, the upcoming adjustments to visa policies could further impact travel plans.

The significant financial implications of rejected applications may prompt residents to reconsider their travel strategies, focusing on countries with higher approval rates and fewer bureaucratic hurdles.
