Five young people lost their lives, and 14 others got severely injured when they were travelling in a bus which crashed in a mountainous region of Oman.

The bus was carrying about 19 passengers from youth homes and a childcare centre which is managed by the Ministry of Social Development. Reports stated that those on board were all orphans.

The bus appeared to have the street and rolled down a crevice in the north-eastern Al Hamra province of the country.

Several people helped the police and rescue team by carrying injured people onto the hospital stretchers.

On getting the report of the incident, police, civil defence and paramedics were immediately rushed to the scene.

Capt Muneer Al Sinan of Royal Oman Police told local media persons that the bus was owned by the Child Welfare Centre in the Seeb province.

Two passengers of the bus were severely injured and were flown to Khawlah hospital in the Muscat, while the other injured people were taken to the Nizwa and Bahla hospitals.

On Twitter, the ministry stated that it was investigating the reason for the bus crash.

It stated that it is with great sadness that the ministry got the news of the traffic accident that took place in the eastern mountain in the Al Hamra province.

The ministry is near following up on the details of the incident with appropriate authorities and is praying that God will have mercy on the ones who lost their lives and grant the injured with a speedy recovery.

Local reports stated that those killed in the crash were orphans, and all were under the age of 15.

During the mid of this month, around 19 people lost their lives when heavy rain showers led to flash flooding in Oman.

Among the dead were a father as well as his two children, who resided in Dubai and were taking the Eid holidays in the country.
