The trees found their roots in 210 strategic sites, ranging from agricultural projects and nature reserves to the bustling streets of Deira and Bur Dubai and the serene landscapes of the Municipality’s parks

Dubai Municipality proudly announced the successful planting of more than 185,000 trees as part of its ambitious afforestation initiative in 2023.

With an average of 500 trees planted daily, this initiative has expanded the emirate’s green cover and elevated its commitment to ecological wellbeing.

The concerted effort has resulted in an impressive increase in the total green area, soaring from 170 hectares in 2022 to 234 hectares.

The trees found their roots in 210 strategic sites, ranging from agricultural projects and nature reserves to the bustling streets of Deira and Bur Dubai and the serene landscapes of the Municipality’s parks.

Dubai Municipality has embraced diverse tree species carefully chosen to thrive in the region’s unique soil salinity conditions.

Local varieties such as Ghaf and Sidr have been prioritized, along with Sumar, Neem, Olive, Samorova palm, Indian jasmine, and palm-like trees.

Complementing this array, evergreen plants like Washingtonia, Bismarckia, Pseudobombax, Poinciana, Bougainvillea, Acacia farnesiana, and Darsina have been introduced to enhance the aesthetic diversity of the green spaces.

The afforestation initiative is not confined to traditional parks but extends to residential and urban areas, primary and secondary roads and bridge intersections.

This holistic approach reflects the Municipality’s dedication to improving air and soil quality while enhancing the city’s visual appeal.

Dawoud Al Hajri, the Director-General of Dubai Municipality, underscored the significance of the Green Dubai initiative as a year-round effort adhering to comprehensive engineering and planning standards.

Al Hajri emphasized that the primary objective is to enhance Dubai’s residents’ quality of life and overall wellbeing.

“Green Dubai’s initiative is one of the critical components of the Municipality’s strategic efforts towards sustainability.

By safeguarding and optimizing the use of natural resources and elements and substantially lowering carbon emissions in the emirate, this initiative seeks to affect the environment positively,” stated Al Hajri.

“This aligns with the strategy and national goals to become carbon neutral by 2050.”

Beyond environmental impact, the initiative has played a crucial role in creating and enhancing green spaces for leisure, relaxation, and reconnecting with nature.

Al Hajri added, “Furthermore, it has also improved Dubai’s cultural and aesthetic appeal, ensuring environmental preservation for future generations.”

As Dubai Municipality continues its relentless pursuit of sustainable practices, the Green Dubai initiative is a shining example of its commitment to becoming a global leader in environmental stewardship.

The 185,000 newly planted trees symbolize a greener Dubai and a testament to the emirate’s dedication to a healthier, more vibrant future.
