GGICO Metro Station to Be Renamed Al Garhoud Metro Station Starting April 14, 2024

The Al Garhoud area is a well-known district in Dubai, home to numerous businesses, residential complexes, and key landmarks such as the Dubai International Airport and the Garhoud Bridge

In a move aimed at enhancing the clarity and accessibility of Dubai’s public transport network, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Friday, April 11, 2024, that the GGICO Metro Station will officially be renamed to Al Garhoud Metro Station.

This change will take effect from April 14, 2024, and is part of the RTA’s ongoing efforts to improve the city’s metro system, providing easier identification for commuters.

Located on the Red Line of the Dubai Metro, GGICO (Gulf General Investments Company) station has been a key transport hub since the metro system’s inception.

However, the new name—Al Garhoud Metro Station—will better reflect the surrounding neighborhood, making it more intuitive for residents and visitors alike.

The Al Garhoud area is a well-known district in Dubai, home to numerous businesses, residential complexes, and key landmarks such as the Dubai International Airport and the Garhoud Bridge.

The renaming of the station is expected to enhance convenience for travelers, particularly those heading towards the airport, as it brings the station’s name in line with local geographical references.

The RTA emphasized that this change will not affect any of the station’s services or operational schedules. The renaming process will simply involve updating signage across the station and relevant digital platforms.

This adjustment comes just a month after another notable renaming within Dubai’s metro network. In March 2024, Al Khail Metro Station was renamed Al Fardan Exchange Metro Station after the Roads and Transport Authority signed a naming rights agreement with the financial service provider, Fardan Group.

The Al Fardan Exchange naming deal is part of the RTA’s strategy to explore opportunities for private sector involvement in the city’s metro infrastructure.

The renaming initiatives are part of Dubai’s broader plan to constantly adapt and modernize its urban transportation system.

By including local landmarks and neighborhoods in the names of metro stations, the RTA aims to increase the relatability of its transit services and improve user experience.

For those unfamiliar with the new name, the Al Garhoud Metro Station is strategically positioned along the Red Line, connecting to some of Dubai’s most important commercial and residential districts.

As one of the city’s busiest transit corridors, the Red Line connects communities from the northern part of Dubai to the southern regions, making this renaming significant for a large number of daily commuters.

The Roads and Transport Authority is expected to implement similar renaming initiatives in the future, aligning metro station names with prominent locations and areas in Dubai.

These changes reflect a commitment to making the metro system as accessible and user-friendly as possible, ensuring passengers have an intuitive experience when navigating the city’s expansive public transport network.

As of now, passengers will be able to see the new Al Garhoud Metro Station signage starting April 14, marking the beginning of the station’s refreshed identity.
