Abu Dhabi Issues First Licence Plate for Self-Driving Delivery Vehicle

Abu Dhabi has introduced its first licensed autonomous delivery vehicle, marking a milestone in urban mobility. The pilot in Masdar City aims to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and support the emirate’s smart transport goals

Abu Dhabi has officially issued its first vehicle licence plate for a self-driving delivery vehicle, signaling a significant step forward in the emirate’s autonomous transport initiatives. The move comes alongside the launch of the first pilot programme for autonomous delivery vehicles, a collaboration between K2 and EMX, the logistics arm of 7X.

The autonomous vehicles, developed by Autogo—a subsidiary of K2—are designed to navigate urban streets efficiently and deliver orders without human intervention. The pilot programme includes a trial operation in Masdar City, where the vehicles are being tested for performance, reliability, and integration into the city’s smart infrastructure.

According to the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), this initiative is aligned with the emirate’s larger target of achieving 25 per cent of all trips via smart transport solutions by 2040. The use of autonomous delivery vehicles is expected to play a key role in reducing urban congestion, improving traffic flow, and lowering carbon emissions.

“The introduction of autonomous delivery vehicles is an important milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey towards sustainable and intelligent transport,” a spokesperson from Abu Dhabi Mobility said. “This pilot will help us understand the potential of such technology in improving urban logistics and everyday mobility.”

Autogo’s vehicles are equipped with advanced navigation systems, sensors, and artificial intelligence, allowing them to make real-time decisions on traffic management and route optimization. The vehicles can safely operate alongside other road users, adapting to dynamic urban environments while ensuring timely deliveries.

The pilot programme also represents a strategic move towards localisation and industrial development. Under the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster, Abu Dhabi aims to support the domestic production of intelligent and autonomous systems.

This initiative not only encourages technological innovation but also strengthens the emirate’s position as a regional hub for smart mobility.

Autogo plans to expand its operations beyond Masdar City, engaging new stakeholders and covering broader public areas. Full-scale commercial deployment is expected in the coming months, enabling businesses and residents to benefit from automated delivery solutions.

Experts suggest that autonomous delivery vehicles could reshape urban logistics in the UAE. By reducing the need for traditional delivery drivers and vehicles, cities can experience lower traffic density, improved efficiency in goods distribution, and a significant reduction in carbon footprint.

“The integration of autonomous technology into everyday logistics is an exciting development,” said a transport analyst. “It combines sustainability with efficiency, and Abu Dhabi is leading the way in the region.”

As the pilot programme progresses, Abu Dhabi Mobility plans to evaluate the vehicles’ performance, safety standards, and public acceptance. Feedback from the trial will inform policies and future regulations for autonomous transport, ensuring that the city remains at the forefront of smart mobility solutions.

With innovation, sustainability, and efficiency at the core, Abu Dhabi’s first licensed self-driving delivery vehicle represents a bold step towards transforming urban transport and establishing a more intelligent, eco-friendly future for the emirate.
