Cold Moon to Illuminate Meydan as Racing and Astronomy Converge Friday

A rare lunar alignment will coincide with Friday’s racing card at Meydan, where spectators will witness the Cold Moon rising over the grandstand, enhanced by telescopes and guidance from Dubai Astronomy Group experts

Dubai’s Meydan Racecourse is preparing for an extraordinary evening on Friday as the Cold Moon, the twelfth and final full moon of 2025, rises directly over the grandstand. The rare celestial display is expected to create a dramatic backdrop for what promises to be one of the season’s most memorable race nights.

According to the Dubai Racing Club (DRC), the lunar rise at approximately 5.48pm on December 5 will align perfectly with the iconic Meydan structure. This alignment has never coincided with a major horse racing event in the UAE, making it a first-of-its-kind spectacle for visitors.

The appearance of the Cold Moon is particularly significant this year as it arrives as a supermoon, a phenomenon that occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth while full. This makes it appear larger, brighter and more visually striking than usual, enhancing the experience for those attending the evening races.

To celebrate the occasion, DRC has partnered with the Dubai Astronomy Group to elevate the atmosphere with educational and interactive elements. Guests in the Paddock Garden will have access to telescopes, astronomers and guided viewing sessions designed to help spectators observe the moon in remarkable detail.

Sophie Ryan, DRC head of corporate communications, marketing and brand, said the collaboration aims to offer a unique crossover between sport and science.

“As the final supermoon of 2025, this marks the closing chapter of the year’s major lunar moments,” she said. “We are delighted to work with the Dubai Astronomy Group to create an unforgettable experience for both astronomy enthusiasts and racing fans alike.”

The Paddock Garden, known for its lively atmosphere, will also bring together popular Dubai culinary concepts. Visitors can enjoy offerings from Little Fox by Rowley’s, SALT, McGettigan’s, Yamanote Atelier and several other favourites throughout the evening.

Tickets for the Paddock Garden are priced at Dh75 and are available through the Dubai Racing Club website. The event is expected to draw large crowds, both for the racing action and the skyward spectacle unfolding above the track.

Gates will open at 4pm on Friday, providing guests ample time to explore the venue ahead of moonrise. The first of the evening’s races is scheduled to start at 5.30pm, shortly before the Cold Moon emerges on the horizon. With the blend of high-energy racing and a once-in-a-year celestial alignment, organisers say the evening will offer something for everyone.

For regular racegoers, the enhanced backdrop promises a visual spectacle unlike any previous season. For astronomy enthusiasts, the night offers a chance to witness a rare lunar event from one of Dubai’s most recognisable landmarks.

As the Cold Moon casts its glow over Meydan, Friday night is set to deliver a captivating fusion of natural wonder and sporting excitement—closing the year’s lunar calendar on a spectacular note.
