Dominica: The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, has extended joyful congratulations and wished International Women’s Day on the auspicious occasion to the ladies across the globe on March 8, 2023.
According to the updates, PM Skerrit took to his official Twitter account to extend his wishes. He wrote, “It was a pleasure to celebrate International Women’s Day with our women who continue to excel in their various fields of endeavour.
Today, we honoured women who care for the most vulnerable among us- our elderly, children, youth-at-risk and the differently abled.”
In addition, along with the Prime Minister of Dominica, several government ministers passed their heartiest wishes on occasion, such as the Parliamentary Representative of the Portsmouth West constituency, Fenella Wenham.
While wishing International Women’s Day, in her remarks, Wenham noted that “March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day across the globe. The day commemorates women’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements in various fields.”
She further added in her message, “We have seen that women can be innovators and contribute to transforming the various sectors of our society. One such woman we celebrate today personifies sustainability.”
While addressing the occasion, she pointed out, “She is a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, a wife, and probably one of the longest-serving entrepreneurs in Dominica. For over forty years, she has been able to outfit the north and northeast of the island, whether clothes for church or shoes for school.”
Moreover, Parliamentary Representative Wenham further explained, “I remember feeling proud after getting anything from her store, Puerto Rico they came from, means you were wearing quality. From stories I have heard, she was a huckster too, nothing far-fetched as her husband himself sailed the waters of the Caribbean.”
Additionally, “She has sponsored various community projects and events. In addition, you knew her at church because she always wore hats. Her doors extended from the clothing and shoe store to a small grocery higher up the street. This, too, has been operating well, and her businesses have been able to provide jobs for a number of women over the years.” She noted.
Fenella Wenham ended her message while stating that, “If you are looking for something to wear and in the Portsmouth area, almost everyone would say, go by Ma Derouche. Join me in celebrating and honouring one of our great! Happy Women’s Day.”
