In 2023, the UAE exported dates worth approximately Dh1.19 billion, making it the world’s second-largest exporter. Jebel Ali Port plays a crucial role, handling 60 percent of the country’s date trade.

More than 10 major exporters utilize the facility to consolidate dates from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Levant regions before distributing them to key markets in Asia and East Africa.

Seasonal Demand and Market Trends

The demand for dates experiences a sharp surge in the months leading up to Ramadan, with significant exports to North Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Data from Jebel Ali Port indicates that export volumes in December 2024 were nine times higher than in July 2024, highlighting the seasonal nature of the trade.

Consumer preferences vary across different regions. In Western markets, there is an increasing demand for organically and ethically sourced dates, while bulk shipments dominate Asian markets.

In the GCC, high-quality, traditionally cultivated varieties remain the top choice for buyers. Among the most sought-after UAE-grown dates are Khalas, known for its chewy caramel flavor, Barhi, which can be consumed fresh or dried, and Khenaizi, prized for its firm texture.

With growing health consciousness, dates are increasingly being seen as a natural alternative to sugary snacks.

Packed with essential fibers, vitamins, and minerals, they have gained popularity as a nutritious option. Additionally, date sugar, a natural sweetener, is witnessing a surge in demand worldwide.

Global Trade and Exporters

The UAE is among the top global exporters of dates, alongside Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, Algeria, Iran, and Tunisia.

Outside the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, major producers include Pakistan’s Sindh and Balochistan provinces and California in the United States, which is renowned for its Medjool dates.

The global dates market, valued at $31 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $49 billion by 2032. The Middle East and Africa dominate the trade, accounting for 85 percent of global exports. Meanwhile, the U.S. market is expanding rapidly due to an increasing preference for healthier food alternatives.

Dubai’s Pivotal Role in the Industry

Dubai’s rise as a global hub for date exports is driven by its ability to efficiently handle perishables.

Jebel Ali Port is equipped with state-of-the-art cold storage facilities and streamlined customs procedures, ensuring that dates reach international markets in optimal condition.

The Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) provides a strategic base for processing, packaging, and export operations, further enhancing efficiency.

DP World’s integrated land and sea transport solutions have improved the supply chain by 20 percent, facilitating large-scale shipments from September to Ramadan.

Looking ahead, Dubai continues to invest in automation, cold storage expansion, and eco-friendly packaging solutions to meet sustainability goals and enhance efficiency.

As demand for dates grows, the emirate remains a crucial link in this centuries-old trade, connecting producers with consumers worldwide.
