Dubai’s Emirates Road Repair Nears Completion Ahead of New School Year

The Roads and Transport Authority confirms the completion of a 14-kilometre road repair project on Emirates Road by August 25, timed to coincide with the start of the new school year and enhance road safety

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Thursday that repair works on Emirates Road, one of the emirate’s busiest highways, are nearing completion. The 14-kilometre project is scheduled to be finished by August 25, coinciding with the start of the new academic year.

The extensive works involve resurfacing and restructuring both the slow and fast lanes along the highway. According to the RTA, the initiative is designed to boost road quality, enhance safety for all users, and ensure smoother traffic flow on one of Dubai’s most critical routes.

The authority confirmed that the project has been executed in stages over the past two months to avoid severe traffic disruptions. Abdullah Lootah, director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at the Traffic and Roads Agency, explained that the methodical approach allowed for steady progress while maintaining accessibility.

“Every 48 to 56 hours, we finish one leg of the reconstruction, covering about 400 to 500 metres of road. By August 25, both sides of the highway will be open, ensuring a smoother flow of traffic,” Lootah told Khaleej Times earlier this month.

Emirates Road serves as a major corridor for heavy trucks, which contributed significantly to the deterioration of the pavement. The RTA revealed that inspections conducted earlier this year detected a noticeable decline in the Pavement Quality Index (PQI), with some sections dropping to around 85 per cent. This prompted the decision to undertake large-scale rehabilitation to restore the road to optimal conditions.

The resurfacing is expected to significantly improve driving comfort and durability, particularly in areas most affected by heavy vehicular loads. By targeting both the slow and fast lanes, the RTA aims to ensure long-term resilience against wear and tear while reducing the risk of accidents linked to degraded road conditions.

Road users have welcomed the works, particularly as traffic volumes are expected to rise once schools reopen. Parents commuting daily and logistics operators relying on Emirates Road for cargo movements stand to benefit most from the upgrades.

The RTA emphasized that strategic planning and phased execution have minimized inconvenience to motorists throughout the project. By alternating between different sections of the road and scheduling works during off-peak hours, authorities were able to keep traffic flowing while pushing forward with timely completion.

The repair works on Emirates Road are part of a wider commitment by Dubai to modernize and maintain its transport infrastructure, ensuring that the city’s growing population and economic activity are supported by reliable, safe, and efficient roadways.

As the August 25 deadline approaches, motorists are being urged to continue exercising caution near the final work zones. Once fully reopened, Emirates Road is expected to deliver a smoother, safer, and more efficient travel experience for all road users.
