Lay’s Chips in UAE Markets Meet Safety Standards, Ministry Confirms

The Ministry issued its clarification on Saturday via a post on the social media platform X, affirming that all food products sold in the UAE undergo rigorous registration and inspection processes to ensure compliance with strict safety standards

Abu Dhabi, February 3, 2025 – The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) has reassured UAE consumers that Lay’s chips products available in the country comply with all approved technical requirements and food safety regulations.

This statement comes in response to recent reports regarding a recall issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for certain Lay’s products due to undeclared milk derivatives.

The Ministry issued its clarification on Saturday via a post on the social media platform X, affirming that all food products sold in the UAE undergo rigorous registration and inspection processes to ensure compliance with strict safety standards.

The US FDA recently escalated a recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, assigning it the highest classification, Class I, which is reserved for products that pose a significant health risk.

The recall, initially announced on December 16, involved 6,344 bags (13 ounces each) of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips distributed in the US states of Oregon and Washington.

According to Frito-Lay, the chips may contain undeclared milk, posing a potential risk for individuals with milk allergies or severe sensitivities.

The FDA warned that consumption of the affected chips could lead to serious or life-threatening allergic reactions, as milk is one of the agency’s eight major food allergens.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, rashes, gastrointestinal distress, breathing difficulties, and even unconsciousness.

The recalled chips were sold in the US starting November 3, 2024. It is important to note that the recall is limited to the Classic Potato Chips variety and does not impact other flavors, sizes, or variety packs.

MoCCAE emphasized that the safety of products in the UAE remains a top priority and that the recall in the US has no bearing on Lay’s products available in the UAE market.

The Ministry continues to work closely with regulatory bodies to ensure all food items meet the highest standards of safety and quality before reaching consumers.

This is not the first time the UAE has taken proactive measures to reassure the public regarding food safety concerns.

Recently, MoCCAE confirmed on January 30 that Coca-Cola beverages sold in the UAE are safe for consumption and do not contain elevated chlorate levels.

This statement followed a major recall issued by Coca-Cola’s European bottling unit on January 29 due to concerns about high chlorate content in Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and other soft drinks.

Earlier, on January 22, the Ministry also addressed concerns regarding pepperoni beef products that had been temporarily withdrawn from UAE supermarkets.

The recall was prompted by fears of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe illness. MoCCAE acted swiftly to assess the risk and, after thorough investigations, assured residents that the products were safe to consume.

With stringent food safety protocols in place, the UAE continues to uphold its commitment to protecting public health.

MoCCAE urges consumers to rely on official sources for accurate information and to report any concerns regarding food products to the appropriate authorities.
