Walt Disney has officially revealed plans to open the Middle East’s first Disneyland park on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. This landmark project, in partnership with Abu Dhabi-based Miral Group, is set to be the seventh Disney theme park globally, marking a significant expansion in the region.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, has stirred excitement about what is poised to become a major attraction in the UAE.
The new park, tentatively named Disneyland Abu Dhabi, will be a welcome addition to Yas Island, a destination already home to major attractions like Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and Yas Waterworld.
Once completed, the Disneyland resort will bring the total number of world-class theme parks on the island to five, cementing Yas Island as a leading global hub for family entertainment.
Although specific details about the park’s design and layout are still under wraps, the project is expected to showcase groundbreaking technology and visionary architecture.
John D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, stated that the park’s design phase will take around two years, with construction likely taking five to six years. As of now, Disney is in the early stages of design, with an expected opening date of around 2032 or 2033.
The park is set to blend the magic of Disney with the unique culture of the UAE, offering a distinctly Emirati flavor while staying true to the classic Disney experience.
Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Company, emphasized that the park will combine beloved Disney stories and characters with the cultural richness of the region.
This will be similar to the approach Disney took when opening the Shanghai Disney Resort in 2016, where the design incorporated elements of Chinese heritage while retaining the signature Disney touch.
One of the most anticipated aspects of Disneyland Abu Dhabi is the creation of a modern castle, unlike any of Disney’s previous structures. Traditionally, Disneyland parks feature castles inspired by European architecture, such as the iconic Cinderella Castle in California.
However, D’Amaro revealed that the castle in Abu Dhabi will be designed to push the boundaries of theme park architecture, featuring innovative technology and a modern aesthetic that reflects the contemporary vibe of the UAE.
Miral, a leading leisure and entertainment group in Abu Dhabi, will be responsible for developing the park, working alongside Disney’s creative team.
Miral’s extensive experience in managing world-class entertainment destinations on Yas Island will play a crucial role in bringing this ambitious project to life.
Disney will lead the creative aspects of the park, including attraction design and operational oversight, ensuring that the park provides a world-class experience for visitors.
While the opening of Disneyland Abu Dhabi is still years away, the announcement has already created a buzz in the region.
As Disney continues to expand its global presence, the new park in the UAE promises to be a unique fusion of Disney magic and Middle Eastern culture, offering both residents and international visitors a truly unforgettable experience.
With the successful partnership between Disney and Miral, Disneyland Abu Dhabi is poised to become one of the most anticipated theme park openings in the coming decade.
