Dubai airport’s North Runway rehabilitation project of 45 days is presently going on as per the plan and is set to open for aviation traffic on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
On Wednesday, The Chairman of Dubai Airports, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, visited the North Runway at Dubai International Airport to inspect the advancement of the rehabilitation works.
During the visit to the site, Sheikh Ahmed was told about the progress of the project and the efforts done by different multinational teams – spearheaded by the UAE national experts from the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) to ensure the work is done within the set timeframe.
Sheikh Ahmed lauded the teams efforts and stated that the North Runway Rehabilitation project is a significant step in our steps to facilitate and cater for the continued growth of passengers and support the development of the air transport industry in the emirate.
Dubai is persistently striving to assure the resilience of its airport infrastructure and increase the services provided to all tourists via deploying the recent state-of-the-art technologies.
The recent rehabilitation project included a workforce of around 400 engineers and field experts and a labour force of almost 3800 people.
While approaching the end of its pavement life, and while airport traffic is seeing a fierce rebound after Covid-19, the decision to reconstruct the North Runway was taken not to affect the airport’s operation in the next decade.
The rehabilitation works include the full 4500 meters of reconstruction of the central strip of the runway, all linked taxiways and graded safety strips. Over 295,000 tons of exceptional mix asphalt and 125,000 tons of concrete have been put on site since the beginning of the works to date.
More than 4230 fully addressable state-of-the-art LED Airfield Lighting (AFL) has been upgraded and reinstalled.
Additionally, the recent technology in the Navigational Aid and the Meteorological Equipment (MET) systems was established to enhance the safety and improve the operational capacity of the North Runway.
