Indeed, the UAE public transport system is set to have a makeover (though some of these won’t be in action for a few years yet).

These UAE public transport updates couldn’t have come at a better time as Dubai’s population is set to soar. According to Dubai Media Office, the population is expected to reach 5.8 million by 2040 compared to the 3.5 million it stands today.

The RTA has announced a vast expansion plan for the Dubai Metro system. If the project goes ahead, Dubai could get 11 new Metro stations and 20 kilometres of new track.

The most significant change will be to the Green Line, potentially extending to Academic City. The Red Line will also get an additional 3.5 kilometres of track.

It looks as if the Green Line will be extended to cover International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City. While the Red Line will finish at Mirdif City Centre instead of Rashidiya.

The RTA plan to roll out electric cars by 2030. It is built on the Chevrolet Bolt. Driverless vehicles are being used in San Francisco in the US successfully and are being rolled out to Austin in the coming months.

There could also be a new form of UAE public transport, as flying taxis could transport passengers across the skies within the next four years.
