The SKNLP, the oldest party in the English-speaking Caribbean region  has a rich history. It was originally established as a worker league in 1932 the time  when workers’ rights were not recognized. However, it  turn itself  into a union in 1940, marking a significant milestone in the fight for labour rights.

At the conference, the party leadership, along with the workers, reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and progress of St Kitts and Nevis. Furthermore, PM Drew underlined the role of workers and said that “workers are the backbone of the federation, and this day is dedicated to all the workers and their dedication.”

The Party struggled for the welfare of the labourers’ class, as it was illegal to have a workers’ organization in the country prior to 1940. The Labour Party’s struggle led to the legalization of labor unions.  Similarly, the party has fought to ensure social and economic empowerment and national development. The party under the Drew administration has taken many significant steps to promote the rich legacy of SKNLP.

The event was also marked by many entertainment activities attended by a significant number of people. On this occasion  the participants had the opportunity to interact directly with the leaders.  It is worth noting that the Party already hosted the annual Labor Day on May 6 to apprise the general public of the SKNLP’s public-oriented policies. The SKNLP is the leading force behind the country’s labour movement for the upliftment of labor rights.
