Distracted Driver Causes Major Crash in Abu Dhabi: New Traffic Safety Warnings Issued

As the vehicle continues through the intersection, it collides with a white SUV coming from the opposite direction. The force of the impact is severe, causing the black SUV to spin uncontrollably before finally coming to a stop

Abu Dhabi, July 19, 2024 – A dramatic traffic accident, captured by Abu Dhabi Police’s road cameras, has once again underscored the dangers of distracted driving. The incident, which occurred at a busy intersection, has prompted renewed calls for vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations.

The 31-second video clip, released by Abu Dhabi Police on Friday, shows a black SUV barreling through a red traffic light without stopping. As the vehicle continues through the intersection, it collides with a white SUV coming from the opposite direction. The force of the impact is severe, causing the black SUV to spin uncontrollably before finally coming to a stop.

The footage reveals the wreckage left behind as a result of the collision. The front end of the black SUV is extensively damaged, with the impact visibly impacting the structure of the vehicle. Fortunately, the video does not show any immediate injuries, but the destruction of the vehicles highlights the dangerous consequences of traffic violations.

According to Abu Dhabi traffic regulations, running a red light is classified as a serious offense. Offenders face a substantial fine of Dh1,000, accumulation of 12 black points on their driving record, and a 30-day vehicle confiscation. In Abu Dhabi, the cost to retrieve a confiscated vehicle can reach up to Dh50,000, with failure to pay the fine within three months leading to the vehicle’s auctioning.

In addition to the red light violation, the driver’s distraction, which is believed to be a significant factor in the crash, could result in an additional Dh800 fine and the loss of 4 traffic points. The Abu Dhabi Police have reiterated the importance of maintaining focus while driving, emphasizing that distracted driving—often due to mobile phone use—is a serious hazard on the roads.

Motorists are being urged to pay strict attention to traffic signals and avoid using their phones or engaging in other distractions while driving. Authorities stress that even minor lapses in concentration can lead to severe accidents, potentially causing fatalities and serious injuries.

The recent accident highlights an ongoing issue with road safety in the UAE. According to a report by the Ministry of Interior (MOI), traffic violations continue to be a major cause of road accidents. In 2023, road fatalities increased by 3 percent, with a total of 352 deaths reported across the country. This alarming statistic reflects a broader trend of increased road safety concerns and the need for heightened driver awareness.

Abu Dhabi Police have called for a collective effort from all drivers to adhere to traffic laws and maintain full attention while on the road. They emphasize that safe driving practices not only protect individual drivers but also ensure the safety of all road users.

As the video footage of the recent accident continues to circulate, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of distracted and reckless driving. Authorities are hopeful that increased awareness and enforcement of traffic regulations will help reduce the number of such incidents and improve overall road safety in the UAE.
