Dr. Heidy Wagdy, a general practitioner at Medcare Medical Center, Al Furjan West, highlighted the risks associated with overhydration, stating, “Consuming more than 0.8 to 1.0 liters of water per hour can overwhelm the kidneys, potentially leading to water intoxication or hyponatremia.”

This condition occurs when the sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low, causing cells, including those in the brain, to swell. Symptoms range from headaches and nausea to confusion and, in severe cases, seizures or coma.

Dr. Aditya Bhabhe, a consultant in Nephrology at NMC Royal Hospital, Sharjah, advised against consuming more than three to four liters of water within a short period, emphasizing the importance of drinking steadily throughout the day in response to the body’s thirst cues.

He recommended monitoring urine color as a simple indicator of hydration status, noting that light-colored urine typically indicates adequate hydration.

For those engaging in strenuous outdoor activities, such as construction workers or athletes, Dr. Khalid Shukri, specializing in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine at Wealth Medcare Medical Center, suggested adjusting water intake accordingly but cautioned against exceeding 1.5 liters per hour to avoid diluting electrolyte levels in the blood.

To maintain proper hydration levels, Dr. Wagdy offered practical tips: drink water regularly throughout the day rather than in large quantities at once, incorporate electrolyte-rich beverages or foods into the diet, and include water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.

In conclusion, while staying hydrated is crucial during the summer heat in the UAE, residents are urged to strike a balance and avoid excessive water intake to prevent potential health risks.
